Background
Lady Vesemir is a renowned sorceress whose name carries weight across the Northern Continent. Known as the Bloody Red Fox, she was a major contributor to the second full-scale war between humans and elves; her spells reportedly killed countless elves. Her life-extending potions, political connections, bloody methods, and vengeful reputation make her someone nobles and knights are careful not to offend. 234
After the School of the Wolf's previous Chief Sorcerer departed following ideological disputes with Chieftain Soyer, Vesemir was invited to assume the role's duties. She and Soyer later had a major falling-out, though their ideological arguments persisted long after. 587
Vesemir and Soyer are Ailin's parents. Before and after his birth, they hoped he would either inherit sorcerous talent or live as a mortal noble of Toussaint—anything but become a Witcher. A series of threats surrounding his infancy, including a Ghoul, the Black Death, and a Plague Siren, convinced them that a dark prophecy might be pursuing him; they argued over whether to keep him from Witcher training. 666 667
Despite her former reluctance, Vesemir ultimately accepts Ailin's life as a Witcher. Her concern for him becomes especially visible when he is injured or endangered, including after his disappearance near Ban Ard. 644 651

Personality
Vesemir is proud, sharp-tempered, and capable of ruthlessness. Her public reputation emphasizes unpredictability, vindictiveness, and a willingness to employ bloody methods when necessary. 234 Even School of the Wolf apprentices fear her discipline enough to call her an “evil old hag” behind her back. 301
Around those she cares for, however, she is markedly gentler. She listens to Mary's desire to become stronger, teaches her and Yennefer, apologizes when her behavior harms Mary, and personally tends Ailin during his recovery. 252 261 316 651 Her greatest vulnerability is her maternal concern for Ailin and the life she wished he could have lived. 666 667
