Background / History
Academy and city
Ban Ard was one of only two magic schools in the North and was renowned across the continent for ambitious sorcerers, unusual alchemical creations, and professional material processing. Its academy trained sorcerers while Kaer Morhen, another Blue Mountains fortress in the same kingdom, trained Witchers. 8
The city was one of Cidaris's two largest cities, alongside the capital of Adal. Mining formed the basis of its economy, while the academy made it internationally famous. 140 Its magical-material trade included products such as Jadeswater, Universal Solvent, and Elemental Essence; rare alchemical materials could often only be obtained there. 633
Ban Ard Academy was the only male sorcerer school in the Northern Kingdoms. Its students were regarded as mischievous and academically inferior to Aretuza's girls, giving the academy a poor regional reputation. 125 Despite this, the academy's senior sorcerers held substantial political influence through noble ties, and many male sorcerers themselves came from noble or royal families. 125 156
Leadership under Henn Gedimidis
Henn Gedimidis served as Ban Ard Academy's principal. He was also one of the five members of the Guild of Talent and Artistry, the oldest living sorcerer, a Source, and the Elves' chosen mage. 125 Jens, Ban Ard's vice dean, came from the influential Felan family and could openly challenge King Haxor. 156
The academy's standing became precarious after King Haxor was killed by a monster summoned during a Conjunction of the Spheres in Ban Ard's arena. Henn recognized that the new king could retaliate politically against the institution even if its sorcerers remained militarily powerful. 207 222
Hostility toward Witchers
Ban Ard's population was notably hostile toward Witchers. Visitors called them “mutant monsters,” feared their reputation for violence, and expected the city's mage lords to restrain them. 140 Witchers were refused accommodation by multiple inns because of rumors that they had rampaged through the capital. 142
The academy's sorcerers also interfered in the Apprentice Combat Tournament by providing the School of the Cat's seasoned Witchers with Esk's Disguise Potion, allowing them to appear three to five years younger and pose as recent graduates. 196 Robin, a former Wolf School sorcerer apprentice, warned Ailin that Ban Ard's sorcerers were unfriendly toward Witchers. 196
Geography and Infrastructure
- Original setting — Built at the foot of the Blue Mountains in Cidaris, near Kaer Morhen. 8 140
- Economy — Depended on mining and the academy's magical and alchemical trade. 140 633
- Academy — A major male sorcerer school with extensive libraries, potion stores, ritual knowledge, and alchemical expertise. 8 125
- Magical defenses — A blue magical barrier surrounded Ban Ard Academy before abruptly disappearing during Drowner attacks; its loss caused alarm in nearby settlements. 328 329
- Rebuilt city — After the Wild Hunt's assault, reconstruction relied on constant shipments of food and building materials because surrounding farms had not recovered. The gates and walls remained visibly damaged, scaffolded, and poorly repaired. 600
- Social divisions — The rebuilt city protected its upper district, where merchants, nobles, and sorcerers' property were concentrated, while the lower district—largely occupied by refugees—was left in ruins. 614
Major Arcs
Wild Hunt attack
The Wild Hunt attacked Ban Ard after leaving Arland. Reports stated that the city was destroyed and that every ordinary human present died; only sorcerers and apprentices within the academy were excluded from that account. 387 Henn Gedimidis was initially believed dead, but he had survived in a severely injured state. 386 610
The destruction sharply disrupted Northern alchemy and magical-material commerce, while Aretuza benefited from Ban Ard's loss as a rival trade center. 633
Senne's takeover
With Henn incapacitated, Senne seized effective control of Ban Ard by holding the principal's life and death in his hands. He used Henn's captivity to compel internal obedience and secure cooperation with Otolan and the Rissberg Civil Conglomerate. 610
Following internal conflict, Ban Ard's Radical Faction and the Rissberg Civil Conglomerate promoted the creation of a secular Sorcerer Kingdom, arguing that sorcerers should rule humanity through their wisdom and talent. The proposal quickly gained support among younger sorcerers. 563
War against the Free Elves
Ban Ard mobilized a force against the Free Elves in the Blue Mountains, but its hastily assembled army suffered heavy casualties, poor morale, desertions, and repeated defeats in guerrilla warfare. 584 586
Senne responded by allowing Ban Ard's Ritual Department unrestricted experimentation in the deep Blue Mountains. The department's practices included ritual defense, divination, golem creation, necromancy, and demon summoning; Bren warned that such actions were forbidden by the Brotherhood of Sorcerers. 584
Conflict with the Wild Hunt and Henn's rescue
Ban Ard and the Rissberg Civil Conglomerate later fielded enough sorcerous power to resist the Wild Hunt behind a resilient magical barrier. Otolan, Senne, and numerous high-level sorcerers took the field, leaving the city comparatively undermanned. 599 600
Ailin, Vilgefortz, and Lydia van Bredevoort infiltrated Ban Ard during this conflict to rescue Henn Gedimidis. They found him alive but restrained with Aetherium shackles that suppressed his recovery. 603 612 His removal deprived Senne of the central leverage sustaining his control of Ban Ard. 610
Disappearance
Ban Ard later vanished completely from its original site, leaving only desolate wilderness. Elemental concentration at the location had doubled since the previous month, and fleeing merchants reported sightings of the Wild Hunt and a Black Dragon around the time of its disappearance. 633
The Brotherhood of Sorcerers subsequently located Ban Ard in the Cave of a Thousand Monsters, also called Dudulak, and began planning a rescue expedition. 651 658
