Background & History
The School of the Wolf was among the last groups to leave Moghlag Castle after the Witcher Conclave fractured in a civil war. Unlike the Bear, Cat, and Griffin schools, the Wolves directly witnessed the Conclave’s gradual collapse and retained much of its original ideal of protecting humanity from monsters. 436
Soyer, the school’s founder and Chieftain, was one of the Witchers who remained at the Conclave until its end. He and the other founders selected a Trial of Grasses formula with the highest available survival rate, prioritizing the lives of prospective Witchers over marginal gains in mutation potency. 446
The school later established itself at Kaer Morhen. Its neutrality originated as a safeguard against the outside interference, factional conflict, and internal bloodshed that destroyed the Witcher Conclave. 130 147
By the time Ailin arrives, the school is a loose association rather than a centralized military force. Kaer Morhen trains apprentices, supports Witchers disabled on contracts, and maintains ties with nobles for gifts and patronage; Witchers who complete their trials remain free to stay or leave. 91
A precognitive dream warns Soyer that Kaer Morhen will be destroyed by mobs and sorcerers, forcing the school to reconsider whether neutrality alone can secure its survival. 92 93 147
Organization
Leadership
| Position | Holder / Function |
|---|---|
| Chieftain / Grandmaster | Soyer Henriette — founder and senior leader of the school; makes strategic decisions regarding its survival and future. 93 558 |
| Witcher Masters | Veteran Witchers responsible for training, judgment, and school affairs; they later form the Witcher Company’s Elder Council. 91 120 |
| Witcher Company Commander | Ailin — appointed first Commander of the school’s organized company, the Pact of the Wolves. 120 |
Pact of the Wolves
In response to the school’s poor coordination and approaching crisis, Ailin proposes a formal Witcher Company. The Chieftain approves its creation, with the Witcher Masters serving as an Elder Council without handling daily operations. 111 120
The company is named the Pact of the Wolves, after Ailin’s motto: “The lone wolf dies, the pack survives.” Its first members are Huus, Bont, and Fred, supported by newly mutated apprentices as reserves. 120
The company develops collective discipline and coordinated combat beyond what independent Witchers ordinarily possess. Its members reach the level expected after five years of traveling trials within a much shorter period. 130 434
Doctrine & Practices
Neutrality
The School of the Wolf officially takes monster-hunting contracts and avoids political or military entanglements. This principle is intended to preserve the school rather than to express indifference toward suffering. 144 147
Its neutrality is repeatedly strained by Cidaris, hostile nobles, sorcerers, and threats against Kaer Morhen. The school ultimately accepts selective cooperation and strategic alliances when survival requires them. 153 636
Training and Trials
- Apprentices undergo the Trial of Grasses before receiving practical monster-combat instruction. 1
- The Trial of the Mountains marks the transition from apprentice to full school member. 134
- Graduates are assigned to Witcher Masters for up to five years of continent-wide contract work, informally called the “traveling trial.” 23
- The master–apprentice traveling period is considered a distinctive Wolf School tradition, built through shared instruction, contracts, and life-or-death experiences. 23
- A Witcher Master’s status is associated with the ritual achievement of killing a large monster, though the school also tests candidates’ judgment and self-control with the magical Voice of Glory. 91 206
- During winter, Witchers return to Kaer Morhen for intensive sparring, sword practice, and Sign training to prevent their combat instincts from dulling. 446
Combat Style
Wolf School swordsmanship emphasizes rotation, using body movement and momentum to generate force capable of penetrating monster defenses. 138
The school teaches Signs as rapid support magic for close-quarters swordplay rather than as a replacement for physical combat. 168
- Monster hunting is the school’s strongest competitive discipline and principal public specialization. 138 200
- Preparation and intelligence are treated as weapons: Witchers study monster habits, exploit weaknesses, and adapt tactics rather than relying on honorable duels. 72 120
- Quen and other defensive Signs are valued for survival, especially among younger Witchers. 158 434
- Wolf School Witchers carry and carefully maintain their swords as an essential daily discipline. 448
Emblems
Wolf-head school emblems react strongly to nearby monsters and can hum in unison when multiple Wolf School Witchers gather. 1 325
The emblems are also used in security and magical techniques, including the detection of concealed locations and coordinated concealment effects. 474 586
Reforms and Innovations
Alchemy and Safer Mutations
Ailin develops Drowner Heart Essence Fluid, a potion that increases Strength and Constitution and can be used safely by ordinary people. When used on the first ten Trial of Grasses candidates, it results in no deaths. 120
The improved survival rate gives the school a realistic path to rebuilding its population and expanding the Pact of the Wolves. 120 236
Other Wolf School alchemical developments include:
- Killer Whale — improves underwater breath-holding and vision. 52 54
- Blizzard — briefly enhances perception and reflexes through a quasi-activated state, though it visibly burdens the user. 265
- Sword oils, potions, bombs, and decoctions developed or distributed through Ailin’s work. 638 650
Battle Cries and Legion Training
Ailin introduces the Path of the Battle Roar and the Legion Skill Resonance to Wolf School Witchers. Shared practice improves the physical attributes of Vesemir and younger Legion members. 447 450
- Battle Cry: Berserk — grants a temporary combat enhancement. 447
- Resonance — allows Legion members to develop through shared training and coordinated battle cries. 447 450
- Battle Cry: Wild Tongue — enables perception of low-intelligence creatures’ thoughts and the transmission of simple commands; its passive circulation improves Perception and reduces hostility from such creatures. 529
Second Mutation
Ailin modifies the Second Mutation process and successfully uses it to heal Soyer’s severe injuries. Soyer initially loses control of his transformed state but regains his human form after meditation, emerging substantially stronger. 556
The success raises the possibility that existing Wolf School Witchers can undergo the Second Mutation, offering renewed hope for the school’s revival. 556
Reputation
The School of the Wolf is widely regarded as the strongest and most reputable Witcher school, particularly in monster hunting. Travelers and mercenaries consider its Witchers preferable companions to members of the Cat or Bear schools. 206 335
Its reputation nevertheless suffers from widespread prejudice against Witchers as inhuman, violent, or monstrous. Innkeepers in Ban Ard refuse the school lodging due to rumors of Witcher violence, while political factions seek to exploit or eliminate it. 142 448
The school’s intervention during the Conjunction of the Spheres—saving sorcerer apprentices and civilians from Drowners—improves some observers’ view of Witchers. 205 206
Relationships
- Witcher Conclave — The school originated from the Conclave and inherited many of its monster-hunting ideals, but its neutrality was shaped by the Conclave’s destructive collapse. 130 436
- School of the Cat — Longstanding rival. The Wolf School is associated with monster hunting and rotational swordsmanship, while the Cat School favors speed, thrusting, assassination, and often brutal methods. 1 138 200
- School of the Griffin — A fellow successor to the Witcher Conclave. The Griffin School is viewed as more closely tied to knightly ideals and secular nobility. 436 548
- School of the Viper — Considered a potential ally against the Wild Hunt, which is the Viper School’s defining enemy. 474 636
- Kingdom of Cidaris — The school’s historical base region, but also a source of political pressure, anti-Witcher hostility, and attempts to destroy Kaer Morhen. 92 452
- Brotherhood of Sorcerers — Historically contentious relationship; later cooperation becomes necessary against large-scale supernatural threats. 485 636 658
- Temple of Melitele — A potential ally whose restoration of divine magic is considered part of the broader defense against future threats. 636
Major Arcs
Threat of Annihilation
Soyer reveals a prophetic dream foretelling Kaer Morhen’s destruction by mobs and sorcerers. The school’s masters begin confronting the limits of neutrality and the possibility that political forces are already moving against them. 91 92 93
Formation of the Pact of the Wolves
The school establishes its first organized Witcher Company under Ailin’s command. The Pact combines enhanced alchemy, disciplined training, and collective combat to counter the school’s declining numbers and decentralized structure. 111 120 130
Apprentice Combat Tournament
The School of the Wolf enters Cidaris’s inter-school tournament against the School of the Cat despite an assassination plot against its apprentices. Ailin and his companions overcome Cat School Witchers using stimulants, earning public support before the Conjunction of the Spheres interrupts the event. 158 199 200 201
Revival Through Mutation
Soyer survives a modified Second Mutation, restoring his strength and creating hope that the school can strengthen and rebuild its Witchers rather than merely survive decline. 556
Breaking Free from Fate
After the Wild Hunt conflict, the school’s supernatural and political threats are reduced through alliances with Henn Gedimidis and Tissaia de Vries. The Wild Hunt and White Frost remain its principal unresolved dangers. 636
