Background / History
Vesemir became a Witcher Master of the School of the Wolf and was once the youngest recipient of that title in a century. His reputation and long experience made him a valuable contact for younger Witchers, whose early contracts were commonly secured through their traveling mentors' introductions. 206 217
Thirty years before the apprentice tournament at Ban Ard, a School of the Cat Witcher disguised as a bandit ambushed Vesemir while he was escorting a merchant caravan. The attacker killed several guards and left Vesemir with a scar near his heart before escaping; the incident hardened Vesemir's hostility toward the Cat School and its willingness to kill humans. 138
At Kaer Morhen, Vesemir became Ailin's principal mentor. He instructed the apprentices in monster lore, swordsmanship, Signs, tracking, survival, contracts, and how to deal with clients. Though initially stern and sarcastic, he honored his wager after Ailin killed a Drowner with a steel sword, giving him the silver sword Beautiful Elsa. 1 3 230
Vesemir fought beside Ailin against the Drowner King, helped establish Ailin's public standing as a Witcher Master, and repeatedly emphasized that credit for Ailin's victories belonged to Ailin himself. 39 40 222
His commitment to the School of the Wolf's neutrality was tested by political threats surrounding King Haxor, Ban Ard, and the Wild Hunt. He accepted Bowen's castle-clearing contract after Ailin explained its strategic value, but later refused to let the school accept a Chieftain's payment for Ailin's armor because of its neutral principles. 153 338
Vesemir later researched the Wild Hunt extensively at the Temple of Melitele and fought through hordes of necrophages during the confrontation with the Great Old One. 269 416 He also recounted the Witcher Conclave's collapse, the origins of the Witcher project, and the failed effort to spread the Vessel of Great Deeds through the School of the Wolf. 436 447 516
Appearance
Vesemir is a gray-haired Witcher with dark-golden, cat-like eyes. He is often recognized by his black wide-brimmed hat, two swords, and the wolf medallion worn by the School of the Wolf. 73 155 445
- A scar close to his heart from a School of the Cat ambush. 138
- Wears a School of the Wolf master set that became tight after his Battle Roar transformation. 445
- Carries the silver sword Aerondight. 83
Personality
Vesemir is demanding, blunt, and highly competitive. He takes pride in having once been the youngest Witcher Master and becomes anxious when younger Witchers appear likely to surpass him. After mastering the Battle Roar, he immediately boasted that even Chieftain Soyer might not be able to defeat him. 445
Despite this pride, he is deeply committed to teaching. He gives Ailin his practical knowledge without reservation, including swordsmanship, Signs, physical training, tracking, social judgment, and professional connections. 311 343 He also pushes younger Witchers through sparring and strict corrections, treating their survival as a mentor's responsibility. 330 437
Vesemir values honor, truthfulness, and the Wolf School's principle of killing monsters rather than people. His resentment toward the School of the Cat stems from its betrayal of those values. 40 138 246
His concern for Ailin is especially pronounced. Vesemir repeatedly places Ailin's safety above personal comfort, researches threats to him, warns him away from dangerous alliances, and reacts with alarm whenever Ailin is seriously injured. 192 269 569 644
