History
Rukia's rescue and Mu Yu's invasion
Rukia Kuchiki serves in the 13th Division, whose work in the World of the Living includes purifying Hollows. After she is taken back to Soul Society for execution, Ichigo Kurosaki, Mu Yu, and their companions enter Seireitei to rescue her 141 160 162.
Mu Yu's defeat of 3rd Division Captain Gin Ichimaru turns the intrusion into a major crisis. Soul Society lifts restrictions on Zanpakutō releases within Seireitei, and Yamamoto orders divisions to track Mu Yu rather than confront him with a lone captain 167. Further defeats, including Byakuya Kuchiki's, lead Yamamoto to fight Mu Yu himself. Their battle ends with Yamamoto alive but frozen by Mu Yu's Bankai 179 188.
Aizen's manipulation of Rukia's execution is subsequently exposed. The execution order is revoked, and Soul Society dismisses the rescue party's invasion as a misunderstanding. Aizen, Gin Ichimaru, and Kaname Tōsen leave the Gotei 13 188 190 191.
Preparations against Aizen
Yamamoto warns the remaining captains that Aizen will return stronger. Zero Division then arrives with the Soul King's instruction to train the captains against the potential threat posed by Mu Yu—an unexpected priority when the Gotei 13 is already wary of Aizen and the Hōgyoku 191 193.
Records uncovered by Jūshirō Ukitake and Nanao Ise reveal Aizen's interest in creating a King's Key, a plan that would require sacrificing Karakura Town. Yamamoto dispatches an advance force led by Tōshirō Hitsugaya to the World of the Living 202.
Battle with Aizen and aftermath
Training at the Soul King's Palace and support from the Visored initially help Soul Society's forces against Aizen's Espada. Aizen's Complete Hypnosis and subsequent Hōgyoku-driven evolution reverse that advantage: the account describes the Gotei 13 as effectively annihilated apart from Yamamoto before Mu Yu returns to confront him 208 209.
In the months after Mu Yu defeats Aizen, Soul Society continues to operate under a changed political climate. The Visored gain full acceptance within the Shinigami faction, while Hollowfication, Arrancar creation, and Hōgyoku research become matters of institutional interest 212.
