Background / History
Kuina is Koshiro’s daughter, a senior disciple of Isshin Dojo, and Zoro’s childhood friend. Raised under her father’s conservative, patriarchal influence, she initially internalized the belief that being a girl placed her at a disadvantage in swordsmanship. Her wish to prove that women could equal men drove her intense competitiveness and dream of becoming the world’s greatest female swordswoman 6 14 15.
When Mu Yu joins the dojo, Kuina becomes his first instructor. She teaches him sword grip, suburi, Isshin-ryu forms, One-Sword Style principles, and Kirioroshi. His extreme focus and rapid progress both impress and unsettle her, motivating her to train even more seriously 7 8 9 10 11.
After overhearing Mu Yu urge Koshiro to treat her more openly as a daughter, Kuina runs away hurt and challenges Mu Yu. Though she fights with pride and skill, Mu Yu defeats her. The confrontation forces her to confront both her frustration at being underestimated and her deeper longing for her father’s recognition 14 15.
A year later, Terukawa attacks Isshin Dojo while Koshiro is away. Kuina defends the dojo’s signboard, suffers severe injuries fighting one of Terukawa’s pirates, and is abducted after Terukawa breaks his promise not to take the signboard. Mu Yu and Zoro pursue the pirates to rescue her; Zoro later frees her aboard their ship and gives her Blood Medicine and one of his swords 22 23 24 29.
Following Terukawa’s defeat, Kuina initially chooses to give the recovered Asura Fruit to Koshiro, believing swordsmanship alone can carry her toward her goal and hoping to ease his old regret. Sun Liu later gifts the fruit to her directly, and she accepts it, gaining Asura Power 33 34.
After Mu Yu leaves Shimotsuki Village, Kuina continues training alongside Zoro. Seven years later, she sets sail early with Koshiro’s approval in order to find Mu Yu. At sea, she becomes a noted pirate hunter, protects villages from pirates, and teaches basic swordsmanship to children 227 237 266.
Kuina eventually reunites with Mu Yu in Wano Country and joins the World Tree crew. Her continual training and challenges against the crew’s stronger members lead her to the level of a Great Sword Master 294 295.
Appearance
Kuina is initially a short-haired young dojo disciple with a beautiful face and a disciplined bearing. After consuming the Asura Fruit, her hair grows to her waist and her physique and features become more refined, giving her a notably graceful appearance 6 34.
- Often carries a bamboo sword during her early Isshin Dojo training 7 22.
- Maintains precise seiza posture and formal sword etiquette 9.
- Becomes renowned for her beauty as she grows older 227.
- Her mature appearance and fierce temperament earn her the nickname “Little Pepper” 227.
- Her later swordsmanship is described as both sharp and graceful 293 294.
Personality
Kuina is proud, competitive, and extraordinarily stubborn. She refuses to accept the idea that women are inherently lesser swordsmen and repeatedly pushes herself harder when faced with Mu Yu’s talent or Zoro’s determination 9 14 15.
As a teacher, she is stern, meticulous, and responsible. She patiently explains fundamentals rather than treating them as beneath a beginner, emphasizing lifelong repetition of suburi, body control, and the unity of mind and blade 7 8 10 11.
Her time with Mu Yu gradually brings out a livelier, more openly affectionate side. She becomes playful, enjoys his stories, and learns to express emotions she had previously suppressed. Despite this growth, she retains a fierce sense of responsibility toward the dojo and toward ordinary people threatened by pirates 21 23 266.
