Background / History
Mel wakes in the body of a gaunt, black-haired orphan in a back alley of the Gard Empire’s Imperial Capital. He realizes that he has died after grinding a game event and has been reincarnated into a world resembling that game. With no exit from his System and only the Game ID “Mel Carlo” displayed, he adopts the ID as his new name. 2
The orphan’s body is controlled by the Imperial City Gang, which forces children to beg and steal. Mel initially survives by assessing the gang’s hierarchy, concealing his origins, and avoiding open resistance against adults far stronger than himself. Anke, a scarred gang member, quietly gives him money to avoid a whipping and later becomes the local gang boss. 2 3 15
While under gang control, Mel befriends Lily, Akai, and Chocolate. He shares food with starving children, helps Chocolate choose his name, and gradually develops a protective bond with the other orphans. 7 8 15
After completing ten thefts, Mel unlocks his first System skill, [Theft], discovering that skills are acquired and improved through repeated actions and proficiency rather than limited skill points. 14 He later kills a gang investigator in self-defense and escapes the Imperial City hidden in a merchant’s barrel. 31
Mel becomes an adventurer in Oak City despite being only around six or seven years old. His demonstration of [Flying Blade] convinces receptionist Ainoor to register him, and he receives the title “Fourth Calamity.” 45 46
He pursues magical study under apothecary Kiriri Pandaram, then later works with Archmage Guweiste on advanced magic, curse research, flight, and teleportation. Though his magic talent tests at only Level 1, his research, training, and game-derived understanding allow him to develop techniques beyond what others expect from him. 66 310 483
Appearance
Mel initially inhabits the body of a roughly six-year-old orphan. He is visibly malnourished and dressed as one of the gang’s exploited children. 2 4
- Jet-black hair. 4
- Gaunt face and frail young body. 4
- Initially wears tattered clothes and goes barefoot. 2 5
- Later develops a more muscular physique through sustained training, though he avoids heavy armor because it would compromise his agility. 486
Personality
Mel is pragmatic, observant, and intensely adaptive. He quickly accepts reincarnation, uses his knowledge of the game’s setting to assess danger, and refuses to treat real violence as if it were only game damage. 2 16
Despite prioritizing survival, he repeatedly protects or aids vulnerable people: sharing food with hungry children, treating Kate’s wound, helping Liberia escape, and agreeing to retreat from the Imperial City to protect Elena and their child. 7 43 211 881
His growth also makes him more ruthless. He kills when he judges it necessary, uses unconscious enemies for experience after his revival, and is willing to eliminate former slave owners after consulting their victims. 31 729 760 He recognizes his own complacency after rapid growth and repeatedly returns to study, training, and research. 483
Abilities & Skills
System and Proficiency Training
Mel possesses a game-like System with a menu, inventory, skill tree, Encyclopedia, lottery function, HP/MP bars, and Effort accumulation. 2 8
- Skills are unlocked through repeated relevant actions; ten successful thefts unlock [Theft]. 14
- Proficiency can be raised to at least 10,000/10,000, unlocking higher grades such as Elite and Master. 21
- His System inventory holds 100 slots and lets him store or retrieve objects, functioning as a form of Space Magic to outside observers. 8 43
- He can reallocate stat points, using this to restore his stamina while fleeing with Liberia. 211
Thief and Assassin Skills
Mel’s small frame initially makes thief-class combat more practical than direct melee exchanges. He later develops into a highly lethal assassin. 17 83
- [Theft] — Steals items within range, though low proficiency causes random results and a high chance of detection. 14
- [Stealth] — At Master rank, does not reduce movement speed; remaining still produces an invisibility effect. 206
- [Back Hop] — A practiced evasive movement skill. 16 21
- [Flying Blade] and [Dagger Attack] — Chosen as core early combat skills because they suit his low physical stats and small body. 17
- [Assassination] and [Backstab] — Can bypass armor and vital-spot targeting; skill stacking reaches 1000% true damage. 448 450
- [Lockpicking] — Legendary-grade skill that can unlock locks by touch without tools. 206
- [Grappling Hook], [Quick Draw], and [Beast Trap] — Later skills trained alongside Stealth. 450
Weapon Skills
Mel learns techniques across several weapon classes rather than restricting himself to one fighting style.
- [Mighty Slash], [Slit], [Thrust], [Rising Uppercut], and [Dagger Attack] are among the skills he learns through experimentation. 16
- [Mighty Slash] at Elite grade doubles damage and gains armor penetration. 206
- [Thrust] at Elite grade doubles penetration damage. 206
- [Guard] at Master grade provides a 100% guard rate. 206
- [Sword Storm] — A Level 100 skill taught to him by Kain during their journey into the Carlos Era. 772
- His documented Level 70 lancer skills are [Charge] and [Piercing Strike]. 766
Magic and Magical Research
Mel studies magic despite a Level 1 magic-power talent, using intensive research and practical development to compensate for poor innate aptitude. 310 360
- Space Magic — Uses System storage to retrieve large objects and medical supplies. 43
- [Fireball] — An early spell he struggles to develop. 16 206
- Conical Jet — His independently developed penetration magic; he treats its mechanism as a closely guarded trump card. 360
- Flight Magic — Integrates [Wind Dance] into his flight system for improved directional and acceleration control. 560
- Teleportation Magic — A long-term research focus; he conducts human teleportation experiments and studies ancient inter-level arrays. 560 616
- Magic Perception — Detects abnormal magic fluctuations and improves further during his time in the Carlos Era. 745 770
- Fire Elemental Spirit Contract — Grants a 10% increase to all fire-elemental magic damage. 390
Necromancy and Curse Arts
Mel’s curse research develops into a necromantic arsenal and methods of soul control.
- Learns [Enslave Ghoul], [Dark Claw], [Spider Silk Formation], and [Dark Ritual] by Necromancer Level 25. 463
- [Spider Silk Formation] reaches Master level and inflicts a 100% slow effect. 463
- Enslaved souls stop attacking him after being restrained by his curse arts. 463
- Develops [Soul Blade Crimson Array] and [Soul Blade Verdant Array] through Curse Manifestation research. 504
- His Level 70 necromancer skills include [Bloody Sacrifice] and [Summon Skeleton King]. 766
Vampire Trait and Demon King’s Blood
Mel’s transformation grants exceptional survivability and later fundamental magical defenses.
- His Vampire Trait activates after he is decapitated, reviving him amid Liberia’s mana overload. 729
- The trait evolves to grant experience from slain victims, accelerating his rise from Level 86 to Level 89. 729
- At Level 70, he considers himself human but states that his composition is closer to that of a vampire or demon. 614
- As Demon King, his blood completely repels external magic power, granting immunity to magic attacks. 844
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dagger — His principal weapon for thief and assassin techniques, including Backstab. 729
- Staff — Carried when confronting powerful opponents and used in his magical practice. 614
- Golden Lamp — A red-quality Divine Artifact that can make its user give up magic power. 731
- Magic-sealing Stone Tablet — A red-quality Divine Artifact capable of sealing space. 731
- Azuk’s Grimoire — A gift from Azuk that can store magic power without limit. 779
- Carlos’s identification plate — Grants Mel access to the Imperial Research Institute’s library in the Carlos Era. 766
- Mask — Worn during time travel to keep his appearance from being recorded in the past. 760
