Background / History

Attainment of the Dao and the Purple Heaven Palace lectures

Hongjun announces his attainment of the Great Dao and Saintly Position, inviting those with fate to hear his teachings at Purple Heaven Palace after three thousand years. His proclamation blankets the Primordial World in auspicious phenomena and compels all living beings to submit. 1

During his lectures, he establishes much of the era’s cultivation framework. He explains that Saints entrust their Primordial Spirits to the Heavenly Dao, teaches three paths to Sainthood—Slaying the Three Corpses, attaining Dao through strength, and attaining Dao through merit—and distributes Primordial Violet Qi to chosen cultivators. 14

Hongjun appoints East King Duke as chief of male immortals and West Queen Mother as ruler of female immortals, granting each a fortune-suppressing treasure. 5 At the final lecture, he announces that six disciples are destined to enter his tutelage, while later refusing further applicants, including Tongtian. He nevertheless bestows the Immortal Slaying Four Swords and their formation diagram upon Tongtian. 30 31

Combination with the Heavenly Dao

Hongjun reveals that his three lectures are necessary to repair the incomplete Heavenly Dao before merging with it. He states that afterward, “the Heavenly Dao will be Hongjun,” and he will withdraw from ordinary worldly affairs unless the great trend changes. 31

He completes this union three thousand years later, calling for the Heavenly Dao to unify with him. The merger vastly expands his authority, but eventually becomes a source of constraint: he must preserve the Heavenly Dao’s operation, guard the chaos beyond the Primordial World, and contend with the loss of his personal freedom. 32 137

Conflict with the Earthly Dao

Hongjun attempts to suppress newly risen Earthly Dao Saints, ordering Zhenyuanzi into permanent exile in Chaos when Zhenyuanzi refuses to abandon the Earthly Dao. He threatens Wuzhuang Temple with heavenly punishment and a world-ending palm strike. 483 542 543

Empress Pingxin repeatedly intervenes on behalf of the Earthly Dao. Her rise, along with Zhenyuanzi’s merit, exposes an important limitation on Hongjun: the Heavenly Dao possesses an autonomous will and does not wholly obey him. In the face of the Earthly Dao’s revival, Hongjun withdraws rather than trigger a catastrophe that could destroy the Primordial World. 484 485 545

Exposure of his schemes

Hongjun secretly supports Heavenly Dao Saints against Li Tian and, at times, personally descends through their bodies. He uses Zhunti’s body as an incarnation, refining a fallen Saint’s body into a vessel for his own power. 520 527 747

Li Tian publicly exposes this act, leading Jieyin to denounce Hongjun for seizing Zhunti’s body. The resulting loss of faith damages Hongjun’s connection to the Heavenly Dao; its origin begins stripping away the marks he imposed upon it. 749 750 751

Despite this setback, Hongjun continues to pursue control of the Three Realms. He manipulates Haotian, attempts to undermine the Human Dao, and revives Demon Emperors Dijun and Taiyi as pieces in a larger conflict between the Human Race and Demon Race. 636 788 809 810 845

Appearance

Hongjun is generally portrayed as an austere Daoist of immense and oppressive presence. He commonly appears in plain white robes, seated upon a cloud platform or lotus seat, with a jade fly whisk in hand. 590 787 808

  • Long beard and an ancient, inscrutable gaze. 437
  • White Daoist robes and a jade fly whisk. 590 808
  • Surrounded by a pressure that causes Saints and ordinary beings alike to fear or submit. 483 527
  • Retains a lofty, detached bearing even when his schemes or authority are challenged. 787

Personality

Hongjun is patient, calculating, and intensely pragmatic. He rarely acts without considering the balance of authority, the Heavenly Dao’s response, and the long-term consequences for his own position. When Haotian appeals to their past bond, Hongjun makes clear that usefulness—not sentiment—determines his favor. 788

He presents himself as an impartial Dao Ancestor, but his conduct increasingly reveals an authoritarian need to keep the Heavenly Dao, the Three Realms, and all living beings under his control. He treats capable figures as assets, subordinates as pieces, and dissenters as threats to be removed. 497 752 856

Hongjun also possesses a genuine desire to surpass his limits. He resents the shackles imposed by the Heavenly Dao and seeks a higher realm beyond the Primordial World, believing that continued stagnation will eventually destroy his path. 137 748
