Background / History
Konoha was founded at the end of the Warring States Period, when Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara reconciled their rival clans and persuaded other powerful clans to join a shared village built around peace. Its founding became the model for the other great nations' shinobi organizations. 30 35
The village was established under the Land of Fire by the Senju and Uchiha clans. According to Iruka's history lesson, the “leaf” of Konoha refers to the Uchiha fan-shaped emblem, while the name represents resilience and vitality. Konoha subsequently grew into a community of shinobi clans and civilians. 30
Konoha's early unity did not erase the Senju–Uchiha conflict. When the First Hokage was chosen, nearly every clan backed Hashirama rather than Madara. Tobirama later established the Konoha Military Police Force, largely composed of Uchiha, to maintain public order; resentment over exclusion from the Hokage position and perceived targeting by the village leadership persisted within the clan. 35

Governance and Reforms
- Leadership crisis — Hiruzen Sarutobi's disappearance and Danzō's abduction left Konoha vulnerable to outside attack and forced an emergency meeting of clan heads and jōnin. 241
- Acting administration — Fugaku Uchiha nominated Kakashi as acting Hokage; Kakashi accepted while recommending Tsunade as the permanent successor. 242
- Elder retirement — Once Tsunade took control, Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura were removed from active authority and retired. 247
- Leaf Division — The former Root organization was restructured into the Leaf Division under the Hokage, with Fugaku Uchiha as head and Hiashi Hyuga as deputy. 248 436
- Academy reform — Tsunade abolished Hiruzen-era textbooks and had Nara Shikaku help create more balanced material on the Five Great Nations and their villages. Jiraiya later became the Ninja Academy's principal. 294 341
Security and Defense
Konoha maintains guarded gates, patrols, reconnaissance teams, Anbu, clan forces, and the Leaf Division. Kotetsu Hagane and Izumo Kamizuki are recurring gate guards, noted for their long-term diligence. 64 90
Despite its defenses, Konoha was repeatedly infiltrated:
- Three suspected foreign spies were found dead in the Small Forest after Anbu responded to a nighttime disturbance. 22
- Kakuzu, Hidan, and Sasori infiltrated toward the Hokage's Office during a lapse in reconnaissance coverage, triggering the crisis that preceded Hiruzen's disappearance. 228 234
- Orochimaru and Kisame entered Konoha to gather intelligence for Akatsuki after the village's growing strength attracted international attention. 330
- Black Zetsu and Tobi attempted to exploit the absence of Konoha's strongest fighters during the war effort. 484
Major Clans and Forces
- Senju Clan — Co-founded Konoha through Hashirama Senju; the village's first two Hokage were Hashirama and Tobirama. 30
- Uchiha Clan — Co-founded Konoha with the Senju. Its long conflict with the village leadership gradually eased after it aided Konoha during the Akatsuki attack and later led the Leaf Division. 35 242 248
- Hyuga Clan — One of Konoha's earliest participating clans and later co-leader of the Leaf Division through Hiashi Hyuga. 50 248
- Nara, Yamanaka, Akimichi, Inuzuka, Aburame, and Hyuga clans — Major clans represented at Konoha's emergency meetings and high-level councils. 241 436
- Konoha 11 — Naruto's generation became a central symbol of the village's rapidly expanding military strength and reputation. 250 571
Story Role / Major Arcs
Internal tensions
Konoha's treatment of Naruto as the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki created deep resentment. Naruto initially came to hate the village after enduring civilian hostility, though friendships with Konoha's young clan heirs changed his view of its people. 45 96
The Nine-Tails attack also worsened the Uchiha Clan's position: Konoha's leadership suspected Uchiha involvement because the beast had been controlled by Sharingan, assigned the clan to civilian evacuation, and placed it under surveillance. 96
Akatsuki attack and succession crisis
Akatsuki's strike on the Hokage's Office exposed weaknesses in Konoha's security and removed Hiruzen from power. The Uchiha Clan's intervention limited Anbu casualties, improved its public standing, and helped avert a wider collapse. 228 241 242
Kakashi became acting Hokage until Tsunade returned alongside Jiraiya. Tsunade's installation marked a shift away from the prior elders' control and toward cooperation among Konoha's major clans. 242 246 247
Rise as the foremost shinobi village
After the Chunin Exams demonstrated the power of Konoha's genin, the village entered a period of prosperity: more merchants and mission clients arrived, accelerating its economic growth. 330
At the Five Kage Summit, Konoha's younger shinobi displayed strength sufficient to deter the other villages' challengers. The other Kage subsequently accepted Naruto as commander-in-chief of the Five Kage Alliance. 460 477
Ninja World War and aftermath
Konoha's younger generation defeated the Six Paths of Pain, strengthening bonds within the village and contributing to the wider ninja world's movement toward peace. 537
Following the war and Naruto and Sasuke's sealing of Kaguya, Konoha became the undisputed center of the ninja world. Rather than use that advantage to subjugate other nations, Naruto hosted a Five Kage Summit in Konoha to establish a lasting peace mechanism. 569 571
The resulting Ninja World Peace Accord introduced inter-village exchanges, reconstruction aid, trade, and a Ninja Alliance Peacekeeping Force. 572
