Background / History

Jiraiya was an orphan and a poor-performing student at the Konoha Ninja Academy. He trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, whom he would later be counted with as one of the Legendary Sannin. His early jealousy of Orochimaru's talent drove him to seek his own path. After accidentally arriving at Mount Myōboku, he cultivated there through persistence and became capable of Sage Mode, though genjutsu remained his weak point. He is, however, notably skilled at dispelling genjutsu. 135 244

Having experienced the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya came to despise war and traveled the world seeking an answer to the ninja world's conflicts. He turned those beliefs into his first novel, The Tale of the Gutsy Ninja. The work sold poorly due to its weighty subject matter, but Minato Namikaze loved it enough to name his son Naruto after its protagonist. 132 202

Following Minato's death, Jiraiya left Konoha under the pretext of gathering writing material.
