Background and History

Crocodile carried out major deeds in the New World before accepting World Government amnesty. His recorded bounty of 80 million Belly had not risen since; Roman estimated his actual strength to be far greater. A past defeat by Whitebeard later shaped Crocodile’s pursuit of the ancient weapon Pluton 49 379.

In Alabasta, Crocodile built a reputation by defeating pirates while secretly leading Baroque Works. He used his sand powers to worsen the drought and his agents to inflame conflict between King Cobra and the rebels, intending to seize the kingdom and find Pluton. Rain Dinners served as his casino and base of operations 49 68 76.

Roman’s intervention exposed the scheme. Crocodile defeated Roman and then Luffy, but the royal and rebel forces united against him. Rain hindered his sand powers, and Luffy defeated him after a prolonged fight with Roman’s assistance. The Marines apprehended Crocodile; the World Government credited Rear Admiral Smoker with the victory 71 75 83 87 88.

When former subordinates reached him in Marine detention, Crocodile refused their offer to escape and declared Baroque Works finished. He was sent to Impel Down, but later appeared at the Marineford battle, where he fought Doflamingo 94 219. In a later battle against the Angel Legion, he told Vivi he was no longer interested in ancient weapons: he wanted to surpass them 472.

Appearance

• Tall, with slicked-back hair, a long facial scar and an earring in his right ear 69.
• Wears a fur coat over an orange plaid shirt and is frequently seen smoking a cigar 69 72.
• Has a large golden hook; during the Alabasta conflict it is on his left hand 69 87.

Personality

Crocodile is calculating and ruthless. He cultivated a heroic public image while engineering Alabasta’s drought and civil conflict, then considered taking its capital hostage when the scheme failed. He dismisses weaker opponents, yet recognized Roman’s assassination attempt as clever enough to offer him a place at his side 49 73 80.

He places little trust in others, including his partner Nico Robin. Roman’s refusal to abandon his crew visibly irritated him, while the collapse of his plans shook his usual composure 71 80 86.

Suna Suna no Mi

Crocodile’s Logia Devil Fruit lets him create and control sand and turn his body into it 49 71.

• Elementalization: Ordinary attacks pass through or disperse his sand body; Armament Haki and Seastone can counter it 70 71.
• Sandstorms and cutting attacks: He creates expanding storms and fast-moving sand blades capable of cutting rock and armor 69 71.
• Dehydration: Arcuate Sand Dune drains moisture on contact. Water can interfere with his sand techniques, but knowing that weakness alone does not make him easy to defeat 69 70 71.
• Large-scale control: He can turn terrain into desert and demonstrates an Awakened form at Alubarna 83 472.

Haki and Swordsmanship

• Uses Armament Haki to overpower Roman and threaten opponents protected by Devil Fruit abilities 71 86.
• Uses Observation Haki, though anger and battlefield chaos can disrupt his focus 80 84.
• Forms sand into curved blades. His Desert Diamond Saber is described as a blade rivaling the sharpness of a Supreme Grade Sword even without Haki enhancement 70 85 87.
