Background / History

Zoro was a renowned East Blue pirate hunter before being captured by Marines and tied to a cross-shaped stake for nine days. He believed he could earn his release by enduring a month without food, only for Koby to reveal that the Marines planned to execute him instead 5 6.

His ambition comes from a vow made with his childhood friend, Kuina: one of them would become the World’s Greatest Swordsman. That promise keeps him from retreating even when faced with death 6 26.

Luffy sought to recruit Zoro after finding him imprisoned. Zoro initially rejected the offer, but Luffy’s determination to recover his swords and shield him from Marine fire convinced him to join the Straw Hat Pirates alongside Luffy and Roman 5 6.

Zoro is a muscular swordsman with short green hair, a dark-green headband, and a piercing gaze described as sharp enough to make others feel cut apart 5.

Zoro is proud, stubborn, and intensely competitive. The existence of powerful swordsmen does not discourage him; it excites him because each victory brings him closer to his goal. His ambition does not outweigh his loyalty. Zoro is willing to risk his life for Luffy and the crew, most notably offering himself to Kuma and enduring Luffy’s accumulated pain.
