Background
Roman is a transmigrator from the Celestial Dynasty who arrived in the One Piece world three years before Marineford Calendar 1520. Initially lacking a Devil Fruit, a system, or access to Marine training, he believed piracy was his only viable path. Even while serving as a young captain among the Silver Light Pirates, he imposed rules against killing children and raping women, exercised constantly, and gave up part of his own share of loot for the crew. 2
The Silver Light Pirates’ captain eventually poisoned the crew over a Devil Fruit. Roman survived, confronted the captain alongside the bald combat captain, and defeated his former leader after learning that the man had fabricated his family history. 2
After obtaining the Paper-Paper Fruit, Roman encountered Monkey D. Luffy. Though Roman initially threatened him with paper weapons hardened like steel, Luffy’s insistence on making him a crewmate ultimately brought Roman into the Straw Hats’ orbit. 3 11
Appearance
Roman has fair skin, a lean inverted-triangle physique, defined musculature, a six-pack, and long arms with an explosive-looking build. His Paper-Paper Fruit body can appear unnaturally smooth and artificial, without pores, veins, or natural skin texture. 11 33
- His skin may visibly resemble layered paper when damaged or burned. 33
- He can shed damaged outer layers through Paper Dance: New Growth, revealing intact skin beneath. 33
- He commonly creates simple suits, armor, masks, and disguises from paper. 33 77
- His White Knight persona is usually represented by white armor or a paper puppet body. 43 144
Personality
Roman is disciplined, pragmatic, and habitually cautious. Unlike most pirates of his early career, he maintains personal hygiene, trains whenever possible, spends his savings on quality food, and refuses to attack without provocation. 2
He approaches combat and travel as a strategist rather than an adventurer. Roman routinely scouts ahead, researches enemy abilities, prepares counters, and warns the Straw Hats about threats they would otherwise underestimate. 16 97 175
Despite his secretive plans and willingness to manipulate appearances, Roman is deeply protective of his comrades. He trains Luffy and Zoro, safeguards Nami during crises, intervenes at Impel Down to keep Luffy alive, and repeatedly supports Ace and the Whitebeard Pirates. 17 33 206 228
Abilities & Skills
Paper-Paper Fruit
Roman’s special Paramecia allows him to create paper, reshape it into tools or constructs, and transform his own body into paper-like material. Unlike ordinary creation-type Paramecia, the fruit combines generation and body transformation. 11 46
- Creates shields, swords, armor, clothing, animals, puppets, and terrain. 16 17 33
- Can harden paper until it can cut or withstand metal weaponry. 3 17
- Uses rapidly moving sawtooth paper to form a chainsaw-like cutting attack. 17
- Can alter his appearance with Paper Dance: Painted Skin, including impersonating King Cobra. 77
- Uses Paper Dance: Iron Armor to counter opponents who rely on speed and low-damage attacks. 20
- Can create enormous paper bodies, including a giant form used during Combat Ball. 132
- His paper can be used for practical support, including fresh-water production, paper armor, stairs, and reconnaissance animals. 17 66 178
Limitations
- Seawater and Seastone suppress his Devil Fruit abilities. 59 91
- Fire is a major threat; Canson’s phosphorus flames were described as a near-perfect counter to Roman’s paper. 30
- He considers the Scissors-Scissors Fruit a particularly dangerous matchup. 303
White Knight
The White Knight is Roman’s principal paper puppet and alternate identity. It can act independently on simple instructions or receive Roman’s full consciousness while his real body remains elsewhere. 43
- Allows Roman to negotiate and fight without exposing his real body. 43
- Is immune to many forms of damage that would endanger a human body, including poison. 43 206
- Can be worn as armor, strengthening Roman’s defenses and serving as a Haki-coated combat shell. 144
- Is weaker than Roman’s true body in raw strength, but retains his experience, speed, and resistance to injury. 63
- Can be exchanged with Roman through the Swap Page for long-distance movement. 258
Ability Pages
Roman can preserve Devil Fruit abilities through paper pages made from a user’s blood and life factors. These pages provide incomplete but flexible reproductions of other powers. 47 226
- Tremor Page — records Blackbeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit power after Roman collects his blood. 226
- Phoenix Page — grants healing support to Roman’s allies. 229 234
- Diamond Page — one of several ability pages provided to the Whitebeard Pirates. 229
- Bag Page — expands storage capacity; Roman compares it to becoming “Doraemon.” 229
- Hormone Page — created from Ivankov’s blood for Chopper’s medical research. 258
- Transparent Page — blocks Observation Haki rather than merely granting invisibility. 203
- Swap Page — enables long-distance exchange with the White Knight. 258
Haki and Rokushiki
Roman possesses Observation Haki, Armament Haki, Kami-e, and Life Return. He later trains directly under Vice Admiral Garp to strengthen his body and Haki. 99 159 235
- Observation Haki — predicts attacks, tracks rapid opponents, detects threats, and assists his reconnaissance work. 99 175 320
- Kami-e — uses paper-like flexibility and precision movement to evade blades, bullets, and Finger Pistols. 99 153
- Armament Haki — reinforces his body, armor, weapons, and paper constructs. 144 235
- Life Return — manipulates his body’s condition and allows rapid physical restoration. 159
- His Armament Haki substantially improves after Garp makes him confront the limits of relying on Devil Fruit powers alone. 235 236
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Roman is an adaptable swordsman who combines weapon skill, Haki, paper constructs, and analytical fighting. He does not consider himself a “true swordsman,” as he freely relies on Devil Fruit abilities in battle. 17
- Uses a cutlass and shield in his early pirate career. 32
- Forms an Eight-sided Han Sword for serious engagements. 144 153
- Can generate sword energy and use high-speed, Haki-enhanced slashes. 241 264
- Reads enemy habits and Devil Fruit mechanics to expose weaknesses mid-battle. 67 241
Devil Fruit Awakening
Roman’s awakening expands his paper manipulation into a large-scale puppet legion. His constructs can absorb and incorporate opponents’ Haki and Devil Fruit traits, becoming stronger during combat. 450
- Creates puppets modeled after legendary and fictional figures. 451
- Coordinates multiple specialized combatants against Blackbeard. 451
- Uses mirror arrays to focus sunlight into Heavenly God’s Destruction Cannon. 451
- Can manipulate cell resistance as part of his awakened control. 450
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Cutlass and shield — Roman’s early standard weapons; both can be replicated or enhanced with paper. 32
- Eight-sided Han Sword — his primary serious-combat weapon, often paired with Armament Haki. 144 153
- Paper armor — defensive clothing supplied to the Straw Hats and Marine forces. 66 234
- Vivre Card material — Roman identifies it as valuable for addressing weaknesses in his Paper-Paper Fruit. 66
- Kongming Lanterns — used to help unite Angel Island and Shandia through shared wishes. 124
Relationships
- Monkey D. Luffy — Luffy insists on making Roman his nakama; Roman becomes the crew’s strategist, trainer, and frequent safeguard against threats Luffy rushes toward. 3 17 206
- Nami — A close comrade who nurses Roman after Arlong Park, trains alongside him, and works with him in combined paper-knight combat. 33 124 419
- Roronoa Zoro — Sparring partner and fellow combatant; Zoro respects Roman as a reliable ally but considers him terrifying as an opponent. 17 158
- Portgas D. Ace — Roman warns Ace about Blackbeard, later rescues and resurrects him through the White Knight’s abilities, and advises him as he leads the Whitebeard Pirates. 67 228 405
- Monkey D. Garp — Haki mentor and Marine supporter who pushes Roman through brutal physical training. 235 236
- Crocus — Roman bargains information about Brook and the Rumbar Pirates in exchange for Haki training methods. 43
- Rob Lucci and the former CP9 agents — Former enemies recruited by Roman into CP0 under his authority as a Celestial Dragon. 237

- The Bad People — Recognize Roman as their prophesied “Great Leader” after he responds to their secret code. 399 432
- Nefertari Imu — Claims Roman as her fiancé and attempts to take him away from the Straw Hats. 459
