Background / History
Early life
Nami and Nojiko were war orphans adopted by Bellemere. Arlong killed Bellemere while protecting them, leaving Nami with a lasting hatred of pirates and a determination to save Cocoyasi Village. 27
While serving as the Arlong Pirates’ navigator, Nami secretly accumulated 100 million Berries under Arlong’s promise that he would sell Cocoyasi Village to her. Her plan forced her to deceive others, including the Straw Hats, and filled her with guilt despite her usual skill at thievery. 27 28
Joining the Straw Hats
Nami first met Luffy while seeking a Grand Line chart and confidently declared that no one could surpass her navigation knowledge. She initially rejected his invitation because he was a pirate, even saying that she preferred money and oranges to pirates. 8
She infiltrated Buggy’s crew by turning Luffy in, then accepted the role of Straw Hat navigator when Buggy’s men surrounded her. After the defeat of the Buggy Pirates, she continued sailing with Luffy, Zoro, and Roman while concealing her arrangement with Arlong. 9 11 15
After Arlong arranged for Marines to confiscate her savings, Nami’s plan collapsed. Roman and the crew intervened at Cocoyasi Village; after their victory, Nami thanked Roman at Bellemere’s grave and chose to sail with the crew openly. 28 33 35
Marine identity
During the crew’s separation, CP0 constructed a Marine identity for Nami under the name Silk-Ann. She became Roman’s deputy in Fleet 211, immediately earning the crew’s respect by commanding a warship and using weather manipulation to destroy four pirate ships. 237 238
Nami later disclosed her and Roman’s Marine identities to the Straw Hats. The crew accepted their dual roles and continued traveling together. 277
Appearance
Nami is an orange-haired young woman whose hair was short when she first met Luffy, reached shoulder length during the Valencia Town campaign, and later appeared as long, wavy hair. 9 243 378
- Carries The Art of the Thief—later called Thief’s Intent—at her waist in combat. 238 378
- Wears a distinctive “Jewel Princess” external armor during the Blackbeard conflict. 445
- Her calmest moments contrast sharply with her usual lively, expressive demeanor. 243
Personality
Nami is confident, sharp-tongued, and intensely proud of her navigation. She is also highly pragmatic: money matters deeply to her, but she consistently places her village, crewmates, and vulnerable civilians above personal profit. 8 27 294
Her experiences under Arlong made her distrust pirates and sensitive to cruelty toward children. She reacts decisively to exploitation, from helping kidnapped giant children to confronting the recreated Arlong without yielding to her past fear. 294 378
She enjoys shopping, fashionable clothes, and high-speed sailing. Although she often complains about Roman’s training demands, she trains seriously and seeks enough strength to protect him rather than merely be protected. 36 239 246
Abilities & Skills
Navigation
Nami is a world-class navigator capable of reading sea charts, plotting routes, and adapting to abnormal ocean conditions.

Rumble-Rumble Power
Nami’s lightning is one of her primary offensive tools.
