Background / History

Sterns was a biology professor at Grayburn College for more than a decade, where he taught cellular biology and worked from a personal laboratory. Though he came from an ordinary background and lacked major funding, he believed his theories could rival those of world-class biologists if given the opportunity to test them properly. His ambitions included making a major scientific breakthrough, receiving a Nobel Prize, and benefiting humanity. 53 54

Using the online alias Mr. Blue, Sterns corresponded with Bruce Banner, whom he knew as Mr. Green. Banner sent him blood samples in the hope that Sterns could cure his condition. Fascinated by the blood's properties, Sterns replicated it and began pursuing a medicine that could cure a hundred terminal illnesses. 54

Li Chuan approached Sterns after attending one of his lectures and offered him a position at Li Group. Sterns initially refused because his experiment was at a critical stage and he hoped its success would secure independent funding and scientific recognition. He changed his mind after Li Chuan revealed his knowledge of Banner's identity and research, and offered extensive funding, laboratory support, assistance from other biologists, and protection from General Ross. 53 54

After joining Li Group, Sterns retained a limited connection to Grayburn College, returning once a week to teach in gratitude to the principal who had supported him. Li Chuan also donated a new teaching building to the college in Sterns' name. 58

Sterns is intensely devoted to biology and can become so excited by scientific topics that he lapses into lengthy technical explanations. Li Chuan's recognition of his work affects him more deeply than the offer of a salary ten times his professorial pay. 53

Sterns reunites with Banner in person after years of online correspondence. He assists with administering and evaluating the antidote, repeatedly cautioning that Banner's Green Gene may only be temporarily suppressed. 76 77
