Background / History

Madara lived through the Warring States Period, where death and violence shaped his distrustful, utilitarian outlook. He later formed Konoha with Hashirama Senju, but the village respected Hashirama while fearing Madara; after the two separated, their final battle gravely injured Hashirama. 7 62 145

Believing conventional peace impossible, Madara dedicated himself to the Eye of the Moon Plan. Its completion required the Rinnegan, which he spent years attempting to gestate while operating from a hidden cave in the Land of Iron and directing White Zetsu surveillance. 56 58

His plan was compromised by Hoshiryu Uchiha’s rapid rise. Madara’s agents lost contact with Konoha after its White Zetsu were eliminated, while the emergence of another Mangekyo Sharingan user forced him to investigate the village through the Chunin Exams. 81 82 88

Appearance

Madara is depicted as an older man whose age is visible in the wrinkles on his face. His eyes have displayed the Rinnegan, though he initially had not fully completed its awakening. 56 107

  • Possesses Sharingan-derived ocular power capable of manifesting Mangekyo Sharingan in controlled targets. 100
  • Can manifest a gigantic Susanoo, including an armored form wielding a massive sword. 101 145
  • His physical decline is a personal concern; he fears his aged body may not endure the power and strain of a future Rinnegan awakening. 107

Personality

Madara is proud, combative, and intensely committed to proving that his vision of peace is correct. Even while delaying his plan to protect the Rinnegan’s gestation, he frames his actions as a final argument against Hashirama’s ideals. 56

He is also pragmatic and cautious when faced with an opponent he cannot confidently overcome. Hoshiryu’s unprecedented space-time technique and overwhelming power persuaded Madara to retreat rather than risk the Eye of the Moon Plan. 103 107

Despite his ruthlessness, Madara retains a conscience that surfaces when confronted with those harmed by his schemes. He feels guilt over using children as hostages, accepts death rather than futilely resist Hoshiryu, and is deeply affected by his reunion with Izuna. 151 152

Later, his rivalry with Hashirama becomes less destructive and more personal. He competes with him over academy teams, finds unexpected satisfaction in students’ expectations, and takes particular pleasure in defeating Hashirama in dance competitions. 250 253 356

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan

Madara’s ocular power allows him to control others and exert influence through Sharingan-based techniques.

  • Placed Mangekyo Sharingan in Roshi’s eyes, triggering the Four-Tails’ release during the Chunin Exams. 100
  • Controlled four Tailed Beasts through Sharingan markings in their eyes. 100
  • Used refined Sharingan skill and combat reactions to contend with Mito Uzumaki’s attacks. 101
  • His renowned Mangekyo pattern remains a symbol of fear among the Kage. 70

Rinnegan

The Rinnegan is central to Madara’s Eye of the Moon Plan and his long-term ambitions.

  • Had not fully completed the Rinnegan’s gestation while operating from the Land of Iron. 56
  • Considered its eventual awakening necessary to defeat Hoshiryu, but feared his aged body might not sustain the resulting battle. 107
  • Kawaki later offers him her eyes, identified as Madara’s Rinnegan, in an effort to restore his strength. 146
  • Learns that the Rinnegan and Infinite Tsukuyomi were part of Black Zetsu’s scheme to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. 172

Susanoo

Madara can summon a massive chakra warrior for offense and defense.

  • Manifested a gigantic Susanoo that froze the surrounding area and halted Mito’s attacks. 101
  • Used Susanoo’s sword and magatama projectiles to eliminate Mito’s shadow clones. 102
  • Can deploy an Armored Susanoo alongside Wood Release: Wood Human Jutsu. 145
  • The armored form was badly damaged and forcibly shrunk during his battle with Ōtsutsuki Isshiki. 146

Wood Release

Madara can create and command a colossal Wood Human.

  • Summoned a Wood Human when choosing to confront Isshiki rather than retreat. 145
  • Combined the Wood Human with Armored Susanoo in battle. 145
  • Limit: Its power proved insufficient against Isshiki, while maintaining Armored Susanoo consumed significant chakra and eye power. 146

Izanagi and Reanimation Techniques

Madara uses forbidden techniques to evade death and extend his influence.

  • Used Izanagi to avoid death prior to the main confrontation with Hoshiryu. 114
  • Deployed a Reanimation Technique clone carrying roughly 30% of his power against Mito. 101
  • Used Wood Clones to delay Hoshiryu while his main body retreated. 103
  • Limit: He recognizes that Izanagi would not ultimately let him escape Hoshiryu’s defeat. 152

Strategic Planning and Espionage

Madara relies extensively on information gathering, proxies, and layered contingencies.

  • Directed White Zetsu to monitor Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Uchiha Clan. 56 81
  • Used the Chunin Exams to investigate Konoha after losing his Konoha-based White Zetsu network. 88
  • Orchestrated the release and control of four Tailed Beasts to occupy Hoshiryu while a reanimated body fought Mito. 100 103
  • Tried to make Hoshiryu his successor and agent by abducting Tsunade, Ji, and Nono Yu. 103

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Former close friend, Konoha co-founder, and lifelong rival. Madara’s desire to prove Hashirama wrong drives the Eye of the Moon Plan; after his revival, the pair compete as academy instructors. 56 152 250
  • Mito Uzumaki — Hashirama’s wife and a major adversary. Madara battles her during the Tailed Beast incident, while Mito later restrains him with Adamantine Sealing Chains. 101 102 150

  • Izuna Uchiha — Madara’s younger brother. Their reunion after Hoshiryu resurrects Izuna is profoundly emotional for Madara. 152
  • Black Zetsu — Its manipulation of Uchiha history and the Eye of the Moon Plan ultimately reveals that Madara had been used in Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s revival scheme. 172
  • White Zetsu — Madara’s scouts and operatives, used to observe Konoha and monitor potential Uchiha assets. 56 81
  • Kawaki — A Rinnegan-bearing girl who protects Madara from Isshiki and offers him her eyes to restore his power. 145 146
  • Ōtsutsuki Isshiki — A vastly powerful enemy who overwhelms Madara’s Armored Susanoo and drains his chakra. 145 146
  • Osamu — Confronts Madara over his past actions and kills him with a kunai while he is restrained. 151
  • Jiraiya — Madara openly disdains Jiraiya’s peeping behavior and threatens him before Hashirama intervenes. 253

Story Role / Major Arcs

Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara remains hidden while nurturing the Rinnegan and treating the Eye of the Moon Plan as his sole priority. Hiruzen Sarutobi’s death and Konoha’s political changes are secondary concerns unless they threaten that objective. 56

Chunin Exams and the Tailed Beast Attack

After Hoshiryu’s destruction of White Zetsu spies, Madara investigates Konoha through the Chunin Exams. He uses Sharingan control to unleash four Tailed Beasts, attacks Mito through a reanimated proxy, and seeks to witness the combined potential of Madara and Hashirama in Hoshiryu. 88 100 101

Attempt to Recruit Hoshiryu

Madara attempts to force Hoshiryu into becoming his agent by kidnapping Tsunade, Ji, and Nono Yu. The plan fails when Hoshiryu defeats his forces, rescues the hostages, and proves too dangerous for Madara to confront directly. 102 103

Battle with Isshiki and Capture

After being transported to an unfamiliar location, Madara encounters Kawaki and battles Isshiki with Wood Release and Armored Susanoo. Hoshiryu later captures Madara and imprisons him in a separate space within Konoha. 145 146 150

Death, Revival, and the Truth of His Plan

Osamu kills Madara while he is bound, but Hoshiryu resurrects him through Impure World Reincarnation and reunites him with Izuna. Madara subsequently learns that Black Zetsu manipulated his Rinnegan pursuit and the Infinite Tsukuyomi for Kaguya’s resurrection. 151 152 172

Academy Guidance Teacher

Madara later joins Hashirama as a guidance teacher for Ninja Academy graduates. He leads a team comprising Uchiha Fugaku, Uchiha Mikoto, and Rasa, and develops a renewed appreciation for being trusted and anticipated by younger shinobi. 250 251 253
