Background and History

Lorgar renamed the Seventeenth Legion the Word Bearers and its existing Imperial heralds Chaplains. At a War Council, he proposed establishing Chaplains across the Astartes Legions to teach warriors, accompany them into battle, and inspire them through creeds. The Emperor rejected Lorgar’s religious framing and reminded him that the Imperial Truth did not treat the Emperor as a god 472.

The dispute continued as the Emperor rebuked Lorgar for preaching instead of conquering quickly enough 659 786. After the destruction of the Perfect City, the Emperor ordered the Word Bearers to kneel among its ruins and told Lorgar that he had been made for command and conquest, not priesthood. Lorgar’s insistence on the Emperor’s divinity gave way to a breakdown after the Emperor departed 803.

Lorgar then led his fleet through a Warp Storm to a world recorded by the Imperium as 1301-12. He spared it after learning that its inhabitants spoke the language of Colchis and held similar beliefs; there he met Inger-Sel, who named the world Cadia and claimed to be a guide appointed by the gods 804. On Sar’n’sath, she showed him the fate of the Aeldari and visions of a future galactic war. After Lorgar defeated Ang’grath the Unbound, Kairos Fateweaver offered him a choice of future confrontation with either Nimrod or Guilliman 805.

Following his pilgrimage, Lorgar told his captains and Chaplains that he had received enlightenment 806. His rate of conquest rose sharply: at a later War Council, his achievements ranked ninth among the Primarchs, and he no longer sat in the last row 837. He subsequently used the spread of Chaplains to carry Chaos faith into other Legions 837 915.

Appearance

Lorgar is described as a golden-skinned Primarch with gray eyes; scripture covers his bald head and face 786 803 1118.

  • His eyes darken from gray to charcoal during the confrontation at the ruined Perfect City 803.
  • When his suppressed psychic power erupts, illusory wings of flame and radiance appear at his shoulders 1042 1043.

Personality

Faith governs Lorgar’s decisions even when it brings him into direct conflict with the Emperor. He argues that humanity needs belief and refuses to accept the Emperor’s denial of divinity 786 803. On Sar’n’sath, he says that he seeks enlightenment for humanity rather than glory for himself 805.

He is protective of Angron, seeking a way to relieve his brother’s suffering, though Angron initially says he respects Lorgar without liking him 1117. Lorgar also insists that finding gods does not make him their slave: when warned that confronting Corax could kill him, he chooses to act anyway 1042.

Abilities and Skills

Oratory and religious organization

  • Lorgar establishes Chaplains as teachers and battlefield exhorters, then argues for their adoption by other Legions 472.
  • After the Perfect City’s destruction, his expanded campaign of conquest and preaching accompanies a rapid rise in the Word Bearers’ standing 837 906.

Psychic power and Warp ritual

  • Lorgar long suppresses a psychic talent he considers unreliable compared with faith. His rage during his confrontation with Corax breaks that restraint, releasing power across the battlefield and enveloping his sons 1042.
  • In combat with Corax, psychic flames flare from Lorgar and interrupt Corax’s attack 1043.
  • Against Guilliman, Lorgar summons souls of the murdered into a blood storm. He also draws a Warp storm toward Ultramar; by the fighting on Nuceria, the Ruinstorm has formed 1120 1124.

Language

  • Lorgar learns the Aeldari tongue after meeting their seers during his pilgrimage 805.

Equipment and Items

  • Illumination of Truth — his spiked warhammer, also called the Scepter of Illumination of Truth; Lorgar carries it at the Perfect City and uses it against Corax and Guilliman 803 1043 1120.
  • Gold ring — worn on the little finger of his right hand and observed emitting spiritual radiance 915.

Relationships

  • The Emperor — Lorgar’s father repeatedly rejects his worship and demands that he concentrate on conquest; the public reprimand at the Perfect City devastates Lorgar 659 803.
  • Kor Phaeron — Lorgar’s adoptive father, who tries to stop him from confronting Corax 534 1042.
  • Zadkiel — a Word Bearers captain who supports Lorgar after the Perfect City’s destruction, while secretly pledging himself to Nimrod 563 803.
  • Nimrod — his brother and a potential opponent named by Kairos. They later discuss Horus’s leadership while each probes the other’s intentions 805 905.
  • Roboute Guilliman — his brother and opponent; Lorgar resents Guilliman’s part in the Perfect City’s destruction, and they later duel at Andermung 803 1120.
  • Angron — a brother Lorgar seeks to save. Angron permits him to try, and they travel to Nuceria together 1117 1118.
  • Inger-Sel — guides Lorgar from Cadia to Sar’n’sath and presents visions and teachings about the gods 804 805.
  • Kairos Fateweaver — offers Lorgar a choice between future conflict with Nimrod or Guilliman 805.
