Background and History
Dumbledore entered Hogwarts in 1892. After graduating, he remained as a teacher and later became a professor; he became headmaster in 1956. By 1992, he had written more than ten thousand papers, including over four thousand on Transfiguration. His other subjects included Alchemy, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Muggle Studies, and intelligent beings. He also held the offices of president of the International Confederation of Wizards and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot 230.
His youthful belief in “For the Greater Good” was one he shared with Grindelwald, not an idea he later attributed to manipulation or a passing mistake. Their approaches diverged, and Dumbledore eventually imprisoned Grindelwald in Nurmengard 459 593 1054.
When Lockhart took over as Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore discovered how deeply he cared about the school: he called it his home after losing the position. A later apparent death and disappearance were part of his plan to draw out Tom Riddle and the Death Eaters, but Grindelwald’s interventions disrupted it. Grindelwald also impersonated him; Anton recognized one such return to Hogwarts as a disguise 220 221 370 389 458.
In his later years, Dumbledore turned increasingly toward education and research. He proposed a fifth Hogwarts House, supported a Magical Research Institute, and announced that he would recommend McGonagall as his successor while staying at Hogwarts to lead the Institute. He subsequently moved his office into its spire 895 1011 1031.
Appearance
Dumbledore is an elderly wizard with white hair and a beard; he wears half-moon spectacles 426.
- Distinctive attire: He is seen wearing purple wizarding robes 622.
Personality
Dumbledore’s attachment to Hogwarts sits alongside a habit of strategic restraint. He could watch a crisis unfold while trusting other professors to act, and Anton came to question whether his pursuit of distant goals made him too willing to accept immediate harm. Dumbledore later questioned his own reliance on balance and compromise and resolved to act more directly for what he cared about 221 592 661 1008.
He is an enthusiastic teacher when discussing magic, but also a competitive scholar: Anton’s independent progress in Transfiguration stirred his desire to explain and defend his own work. His tolerance has limits. During research into goblin transformation, he argued that goblins becoming human posed a danger to their survival, prompting Anton to challenge the human-centered boundary of his beliefs 675 969 989.
Abilities and Skills
Transfiguration and magical theory
Dumbledore’s extensive Transfiguration research includes Albus’s World of Transfiguration, a book designed to reveal its contents as Anton reached the understanding needed to read it 230 989.
- He describes Transfiguration through changes in an object’s state, state of existence, and state of possibility 989.
- He recognizes that magical power in different beings and objects is interconnected, identifying the principle as fundamental to Transfiguration 969.
- He secretly learned Anton’s Apparition-based Transfiguration spell 895.
Spellcasting and defence
Dumbledore teaches that a spell is shaped by the caster’s mind and intended target, rather than traveling as a projectile from wand to target 699.
- His surging magical power can rebound a Cruciatus Curse even when he has stopped resisting 197.
- He deflects gunfire, including bullets carrying Anti-Magic Potion, and repairs a damaged building with a Restoration Charm 817.

Teaching and scholarship
- He gives Anton private master-level lessons and arranges a gathering for Anton to present his soul research to the Hogwarts professors 553 737.
- He explains two forms of wandless magic: spells mastered well enough to cast by thought, and traditions that use the body as a casting medium. He warns that the latter can leave practitioners vulnerable to Dark Magic 699.
- He proposes the Magical Research Institute as a place to guide young wizards into deeper study 1011 1054.
