Background / History

Scáthach is a legendary Celtic female warrior who entered the divine realm while still human. Having slain countless undead, humans, demons, monsters, and gods, she became the Queen and gatekeeper of the Land of Shadows, a realm beyond the world populated by the dead. Her victories brought innumerable curses, including eternal youth and immortality. 4 20 21

Unable to die naturally, Scáthach views death in a worthy battle as salvation. She fears ultimately vanishing only when both the inner and outer worlds are destroyed, rather than dying as a warrior should: in a duel. 21

Fu Yuan's System pulls her from the Land of Shadows to the surface world. Since her Wisdom of the Mystic Realm cannot perceive his past or future, she becomes intensely interested in him and accepts his request to spar on Mount Ensō. 20 21

After Fu Yuan destroys her Skeleton Soldiers and withstands her god-slaying spear techniques, Scáthach recognizes his strength. She remains at his side both to seek the opponent who may one day kill her and to assist him with magic and cultivation. 26 31

Sajyou Manaka later sends Scáthach back to the Land of Shadows. Because Scáthach has lost the concept of death and is considered neither fully alive nor dead, Fu Yuan is able to summon her as a Lancer-class Servant. 191 199 200

Following the creation of a World Channel Bridge, Scáthach's physical body appears in the Land of Shadows. However, she has no memories of her Servant activities; she suspects that her missing Servant aspect or memories may have gone to the Norse mountain goddess Skadi, with whom she is inseparably connected. 254 255

Appearance

Scáthach is an eternally youthful, exceptionally beautiful woman with an alluring but imposing presence. She is initially veiled and dressed in black-and-purple combat attire, later using magecraft to adopt modern clothing. 20 21 33

  • Purplish-red hair. 31 157
  • Purple or crimson eyes described as flame-like and bewitching. 20 21
  • Initially wears a black veil covering the lower half of her face. 20
  • Favors a form-fitting black-and-purple combat outfit, which she considers practical for battle. 20 33
  • Can weave alternate clothing through magic, including a blue school uniform and modern sweaters. 33 88 157

Personality

Scáthach is fundamentally a warrior. Battle is her oldest and strongest interest, and a formidable opponent can awaken a fighting spirit that has lain dormant for thousands of years. She values focus and mastery, having devoted herself to spear techniques and primordial Rune Magic rather than scattering her efforts across many disciplines. 26 32

Despite her initially detached attitude toward modern life and ordinary pursuits, Scáthach becomes playful and teasing around Fu Yuan. She enjoys provoking his embarrassment, but also provides practical magical assistance, heals him when needed, and protects those important to him. 21 32 66 174

Her bond with Fu Yuan changes her outlook. Once convinced she cared only for combat, she comes to recognize romantic love and wishes to remain with him rather than return alone to the Land of Shadows. 40 94 246

Abilities & Skills

Divine-Realm Spear Technique

Scáthach's spear mastery has reached a god-slaying level. She claims that a perfected spear strike can kill a god with little more than a turn of the wrist. 20 32

  • Uses rapid, precise thrusts and sweeping barrages capable of overwhelming close-range opponents. 27 28
  • Can materialize and wield twin crimson spears in combat. 212 213
  • Defeated a group of Sphinxes by piercing their foreheads and hearts without releasing a Noble Phantasm. 213
  • Offered to teach Fu Yuan her God-Slaying Spear Technique after witnessing the power of his Shadow Knight: Moon Halo form. 36

Wisdom of the Mystic Realm

A profound ability gained through transcending humanity, slaying gods, and placing herself outside the world. It normally lets Scáthach see a person's past and future with complete accuracy. 20

  • Foresees future events and battle situations with clairvoyant accuracy. 20 93
  • Can locate individuals when given sufficient identifying information. 93
  • Supplies intelligence on enemies and their weapons. 121
  • Detects magical presences, Familiars, barriers, and Ley Lines. 21 43 71
  • Cannot perceive Fu Yuan's past or future, nor beings whose existence is concealed by Sajyou Manaka. 20 71 121

Primordial Rune Magic

Scáthach commands eighteen primal Rune spells from the Age of Gods, distinct from the lower-level magecraft of modern magi. 30

  • Creates large-scale magic formations without circles, Mystic Codes, or material catalysts. 22
  • Connects formations to Ley Lines to sustain them with mana. 22
  • Establishes barriers that conceal presence, aura, damage, and visual conditions from outsiders. 22 31 32
  • Heals injuries and restores damaged magically created clothing. 30
  • Can separate the causal link involved in a Servant's magecraft. 66

Gate of the Land of Shadows

Scáthach can open a gate linking the surface world to the Land of Shadows. The gate is decorated with depictions of beings she has slain. 23

  • Summons Death Skeleton Soldiers from the Land of Shadows. 23
  • Strengthens Skeleton Soldiers by infusing them with dark energy, repairing and reinforcing their bones. 25
  • Provides passage into the Land of Shadows. 23 254
  • Her presence on the surface is ordinarily rejected by the Counter Force; Fu Yuan's System initially conceals her existence from it. 20 23 31

Servant Manifestation

Because she has lost the concept of death, Scáthach can be summoned despite not being conventionally deceased. 199

  • Answers Fu Yuan's summons as Lancer Scáthach. 200
  • Materializes with twin spears and retains her combat and magical capabilities. 200 213
  • Her Servant form has limitations, motivating her wish to bring her physical body to the material world. 248

  • Gate of the Land of Shadows — A summoned portal used to access her realm and deploy Skeleton Soldiers. 23

Relationships

  • Irisviel von Einzbern — Treated as a sister; Scáthach prioritizes protecting Irisviel and her unborn child over joining battles against weaker opponents. 174 191

  • Cú Chulainn — Her disciple, described by Scáthach as “unpromising.” 33
  • Illya — In a future timeline, Illya addresses her as “Master Sister” and recalls being trained by Scáthach. 437

Story Role / Major Arcs

Summoning and Mount Ensō Spar

Scáthach is summoned to Fuyuki by Fu Yuan's System and agrees to test him on Mount Ensō. She first deploys hundreds of Skeleton Soldiers to judge his strength, then personally accepts his challenge after he defeats even her enhanced summons. 20 22 23 24 26

Their spar establishes their relationship: Scáthach's spear assault cannot break Fu Yuan's defensive techniques, while his strength and unpredictability revive her long-dormant desire for battle. 27 28 29

Life with Fu Yuan

Scáthach moves into Fu Yuan's home, helps with barriers and Ley Line detection, accompanies him to Germany, and repeatedly spars with him. As their time together continues, she begins adapting to modern comforts and confronting feelings she had never previously acknowledged. 31 32 40 43 45

Holy Grail War and Servant Summoning

While generally serving as an adviser, Scáthach protects Irisviel during the Holy Grail War and investigates magical threats. After Manaka returns her to the Land of Shadows, Fu Yuan summons her back as a Lancer-class Servant due to her anomalous existence between life and death. 174 191 199 200

She identifies Ley Line anomalies tied to Manaka and later battles alongside Artoria at the Great Composite Shrine of Radiance, eliminating the Sphinxes guarding its entrance. 201 212 213

Return to the Land of Shadows

Scáthach asks Fu Yuan to retrieve her physical body from the Land of Shadows so she can escape the limitations of her Servant form. The World Channel Bridge makes travel between realms possible, but her restored physical self lacks memories of her Servant period. 248 254 255
