Background / History

Odin was Asgard’s king and the ruler who conquered the Nine Realms through war. During those campaigns, he and his eldest daughter Hela fought side by side, leaving behind a history of slaughter that Asgard later concealed beneath idealized palace murals. After conquest, Odin abandoned expansion in favor of a more benevolent rule; Hela rejected this change, and Odin sealed her away on Earth. 142 144

He acquired Rune Script after sacrificing his right eye for wisdom from the Well of Wisdom and hanging from the World Tree for nine days and nights. Rune Script later became the magical foundation of the Nine Realms. 142

Odin defeated Surtur after his brothers Vili and Ve transferred their power to him through their bloodline connection. He took the Eternal Fire and weakened Surtur, preventing the Fire King from threatening Asgard directly. 145

As king, Odin also deposed and sealed his elder brother, Kur/Ouroboros, after Kur became a tyrant. Odin learned from the World Tree that only Thor could kill Kur, but that Thor would die in doing so; unwilling to sacrifice his son, Odin imprisoned Kur on Earth instead. 146

Odin’s actions created further long-term enemies. He sealed an entire extraordinary race in a bottomless abyss after they attacked Asgard; their collective resentment later formed Mangog. 152

In his final years, Odin’s divine power had grown immensely with age, but his body could no longer safely contain it. He sent Thor to Earth as a mortal after Thor’s reckless attack on Jotunheim, hoping the experience would prepare him to protect Asgard through Ragnarok. 70

Though once a ruthless conqueror, Odin later sought stability over expansion. His decision to seal Hela, Kur, and other threats shows both his willingness to make harsh choices and his tendency to leave dangerous problems unresolved for later generations. 142 146 148

His concern for Asgard and Thor ultimately restrained him. Despite being provoked by Ron, Odin conceded the Ancient Frost Giant Coffin rather than risk a battle that would immediately kill him and destabilize the Nine Realms. 76
