Background and History
Usopp grew up in Syrup Village. His father, Yasopp, left to sail with Shanks; Usopp remains proud of Yasopp’s life as a pirate and defends his reputation fiercely 7 9. He led three children in the self-styled Usopp Pirates and visited the sickly Kaya to cheer her with tall tales after her parents’ deaths 6 8.
When the Straw Hats arrived, Usopp tried to frighten them away by claiming to command eighty million subordinates. Nami exposed the bluff, and an embarrassed Usopp aimed his slingshot at Luffy. Luffy later recognized him as Yasopp’s son 6 7. At Kaya’s mansion, Usopp struck Kuro for insulting his father. Kuro’s pirate identity was subsequently exposed, and Usopp warned the others that the Black Cat Pirates planned to attack the village 9 10 15.
Usopp left Syrup Village to seek adventure, promising Kaya that he would return with true stories. Luffy welcomed him aboard the Merry, where Usopp drew the crew’s flag. After he proved his aim, Luffy named him the crew’s sniper 22 23 29.
Appearance
Usopp is recognizable by his long nose and sniper goggles. Training changes him from a slight youth into a muscular fighter with darker, firmer skin; after two years, he is described as tall and sturdy 6 103 168 387.
- Sniping gear — Wears goggles suited to aiming; later uses wind-resistant goggles and a camouflage cloak when taking a concealed position 168 371.
- Physique — Develops defined arm muscles during Ronan’s training and a substantially sturdier build after two years 103 387.
Personality
Usopp boasts extravagantly and often panics when faced with danger. His claims of captaining a vast crew persist even after he joins the Straw Hats, but his stories also have a kinder purpose: making Kaya laugh 6 8 23. He is proud of his father and of his ambition to become a brave sea warrior 7 9 60.
Training gives him the courage to fight directly, but it does not erase his fear. He stands up to Wapol’s soldiers and repeatedly rises to protect Luffy from Sengoku, yet later fears ghosts, Kaido, and a proposed war against the World Government 107 220 325 326 524 699. He also favors caution when the crew considers charging an Emperor’s fleet 653.
Abilities & Skills
Sniping and tactical shooting
Usopp’s strongest skill is precise long-range fire. He accounts for wind, distance, and a moving ship when aiming, and can place shots close to allies without hitting them 28 371 458.
- Hits a distant reef with a single shot, securing his role as the Straw Hats’ sniper 29.
- Uses gunpowder rounds to create a smoke-and-flame barrier so Robin and Franky can advance 194.
- Shoots vines off Franky without damaging his steel body 458.
- Fires a Haki-coated projectile through a watchtower opening roughly three kilometers away 372.
- Detonates an enemy warship’s ammunition by shooting into its cannon barrel 594.
- His shots are not universally effective: one alloy projectile leaves only a scratch on a Pacifista, and a special shot fails to seriously injure Kaido 248 523.
Observation Haki
Observation Haki helps Usopp detect and track opponents beyond ordinary sight 137 459.
- First recognizes it when he senses his surroundings and predicts Van Augur’s movement 137.
- Separates Binz’s true trajectory from the afterimages created by Soru 458 459.
- Against Sengoku, it warns him of an incoming punch, but his body cannot move quickly enough to avoid it 326.
Body-hardening and close combat
Ronan’s Thirteen Protectors’ training gives Usopp the durability and strength to survive attacks that would once have driven him away 60 107 197.
- Bronze Skin Iron Bones lets him withstand rifle blows and musket fire during the fight with Wapol’s soldiers 107.
- Against Fukurou, he endures repeated Finger Gun-powered blows and uses his heavy Alloy Slingshot as a melee weapon to defeat him 196 197.
- Later channels True Qi into his body and kills Kalva’s Guard Captain with a single close-range slap 373.
- His defenses have limits: Sengoku overwhelms his protective inner energy, leaving him severely injured 326.
Armament Haki and internal force
Usopp combines martial-arts training with his ammunition to increase a shot’s force 248 281 372.
- Fires an internal-force-infused alloy pellet at a Pacifista, though it barely damages the target 248.
- Coats custom alloy projectiles in Advanced Armament Haki for long-range sniping 372.
- Stops a charging Vice Admiral with a special sonic explosive round, knocking the Haki-protected officer backward rather than defeating him outright 644.
Equipment and Items
- Slingshots — Begins with a simple slingshot; later carries a heavy Alloy Slingshot used both for shooting and close combat. His black alloy slingshot is also named Kabuto 6 196 458.
- Special ammunition — Uses Gunpowder Stars, Lead Bullet Stars, high-density alloy projectiles, and explosive rounds 194 195 372 644.
- Goggles and scope — Uses goggles for aiming and later sights a three-kilometer shot through a scope 28 371 372.
- Seastone handcuffs — Keeps a pair obtained from Smoker and uses them to restrain Enel 146.
Relationships
- Yasopp — Father and a member of Shanks’ crew; Usopp admires him and angrily rejects insults to his pirate life 7 9.
- Kaya — Childhood sweetheart whom he cheers with stories; promises to return with true stories when he leaves Syrup Village 8 22.
- Luffy — Captain who invites him aboard and appoints him sniper. Usopp risks his life trying to protect him from Sengoku 23 29 325 326.
- Ronan — Crewmate and martial-arts mentor whose demanding training pushes Usopp to become stronger 59 60 373.
- Chopper — Friend who shares Usopp’s fear of supernatural threats; later prepares the medicinal bath for his Internal Qi Cultivation breakthrough 220 219.
- Franky — Crewmate whom Usopp frees from Binz’s vines with precise shots; Franky also makes custom alloy sniper projectiles for him 372 458.
Story Role and Major Arcs
