Background and History

Sanji served as the vice-chef of the sea restaurant Baratie under “Red-Foot” Zeff. Though he dreamed of reaching the Grand Line, he refused to leave the restaurant because of his debt to Zeff, who had saved him at the cost of a leg. He regarded remaining at Baratie and protecting Zeff as a responsibility he could not abandon. 36 41

His dream is to discover the All Blue, a miraculous sea where fish from all four Blues gather. Luffy recognized the same conviction he held toward becoming Pirate King and persistently recruited him. 41

Zeff and the Baratie chefs deliberately disparaged Sanji’s cooking to force him to pursue his own dream. After learning that his soup was genuinely respected and that Zeff wanted him to sail for the Grand Line, Sanji accepted Luffy’s offer and joined the Straw Hat Pirates as their cook. 42
