Background / History

Zoro was already a feared East Blue swordsman known as the “Pirate Hunter” when Ronan first encountered him at Star Cape Town. After Ronan killed the pirate captain, Zoro cut down every fleeing pirate with precise sword strikes, then scrutinized Ronan’s unusual martial techniques and accepted him as a potential crewmate. 4

He trained alongside Luffy under Ronan, learning the Horse Stance, breathing techniques, body refinement, and eventually both Observation and Armament Haki. Zoro’s competitive drive made him especially receptive to the harsh training, including blindfolded dodging drills against the Zhangba Iron Spear. 5 27 57 59

At the Baratie, Zoro challenged Dracule Mihawk despite recognizing the immense gulf between them. Mihawk shattered Zoro’s two ordinary swords and defeated him with Yoru, but Zoro survived through his Bronze Skin Iron Bones training.
