Background
Hongjun invited Tongtian to become his disciple in the Purple Firmament Palace, offering the Four Immortal Slaying Swords and their formation diagram because of Tongtian's affinity for formations. Tongtian did not immediately accept the offer. 28
Unlike Laozi and Yuanshi, Tongtian refused to cultivate Hongjun's Slaying the Three Corpses method. He regarded it as a trap and believed that the Three Pure Ones should forge their own route to enlightenment rather than rely on an external method. 54 55
Tongtian instead devoted himself to the Path of the Origin, focusing on the Law of the Sword and Law of Formations. The path advanced slowly at first, but his exchanges with Xuan Yang—including his extended stay on the Sun Star—eventually led to major breakthroughs. 55 73 182
After attaining the Dao, Tongtian founded and led the Intercepting Sect. He embraced a doctrine of offering a path to all beings, regardless of origin, and established the famed gathering of “Myriad Immortals Come to Court.” 102 252
Appearance
Tongtian is a youthful-looking Daoist whose bearing is compared to a sword drawn from its sheath. He is usually depicted in a green Daoist robe, with long black hair and an austere, sharp presence. 174 368
- His eyes are described as containing the birth and death of the universe and the cycles of all things. 174
- He possesses a restrained but supreme sword intent capable of making his identity unmistakable to Intercepting Sect disciples. 368
- Projections of the Four Immortal Slaying Swords are often visible behind him when his killing intent rises. 174
Personality
Tongtian is independent, loyal, and persistent in following his own Dao. He rejected the Three Corpses method despite the faster progress it offered his brothers, choosing instead to cultivate Sword and Formation Laws through his own efforts. 54 55 182
He believes that all living beings deserve the opportunity to hear and cultivate the Dao. This conviction shaped both his preaching to the beings of the Primordial Wilderness and the inclusive principles of the Intercepting Sect. 125 252
Although renowned for his fierce temper and protectiveness toward disciples, Tongtian is not blindly impulsive. When Shi Ji's death appeared to implicate Nezha and Xuan Yang, he restrained his anger, closed Biyou Palace, forbade retaliation, and personally investigated the evidence. 421 422
Abilities & Skills
Law of the Sword
Tongtian's Sword Law manifests as overwhelming sword intent and law-formed spiritual swords rather than conventional spellwork. He can create sword qi on a massive scale and use his own body and qi as the basis of a sword formation. 119 148 426
- Summons hundreds of thousands of spiritual swords and formations to suppress opponents. 119 148
- His sword formations overwhelmed Yuanshi's main body, Good Corpse, and Evil Corpse while Tongtian deliberately limited the damage to superficial wounds. 119
- A single distant sword strike formed a miniature sword formation that wounded Zhunti and Jieyin and drove them away. 398
- His supreme sword intent can heal and purify Saint-level foreign power from Wen Zhong's body. 396
Law of Formations
Formations are Tongtian's other core law and his greatest specialty. He can identify flaws in complex treasure-based arrays, create specialized spiritual arrays, and stack formations to amplify their effects. 73 106 140
- Helped Xuan Yang refine a formation whose attack method detonated Innate Spiritual Treasures. 73
- Created formations that stabilized trembling areas of Human Race territory. 38
- Could construct an array to draw Sha Qi and Chaos Qi from Chaos to strengthen ferocious beasts. 106
- Thousands of his formations can kill peak Grand Unity Golden Immortals individually; their combined force can trap or threaten Quasi-Saints. 201
- His formations could contain Yuanshi even after Yuanshi borrowed the Primordial World's power, unless Yuanshi used supreme treasures. 148
Path of the Origin
Tongtian cultivates through self-comprehended laws rather than the Heavenly Dao's Saint path or the Three Corpses method. This path is difficult and slow but grants him exceptional direct combat power. 54 55 182
- His raw strength became the greatest among the Three Pure Ones after reaching middle-stage Primordial Golden Immortal. 201
- Even as a non-Heavenly Dao cultivator, he could challenge Yuanshi's Saintly authority through pure Sword and Formation Laws. 148 426
- His lack of equivalent supreme treasures remains a weakness against combined artifact-based assaults such as the Pangu Banner and Immortal Slaying Sword Formation. 152 426
Dao Preaching
Tongtian teaches openly rather than reserving cultivation for those of high status or superior origins. 125 252
- Preached to ordinary beings of the Primordial Wilderness for fifty years and received substantial Heavenly Dao Merit. 252
- Spread the Dao of the Sword and Dao of Formations among humanity, expanding their available cultivation paths. 125
- His preaching is founded on the principle that any being with a connection may listen to the Dao. 252

- Six-Eared Macaque — Xuan Yang's disciple. Tongtian personally received him at Biyou Palace and rewarded him for preventing Calamity Qi-afflicted Intercepting disciples from massacring mortals. 472

Intercepting Sect and the Investiture Crisis
After learning through Xuan Yang's diary that the Intercepting Sect was fated for destruction, Tongtian resolved to prevent his disciples from suffering that fate. He became increasingly vigilant against schemes involving Hongjun, the Western Sect, and the Investiture of the Gods. 115 184
