Background / History
Uchiha Massacre and Contamination
Danzo possesses one of Shisui’s stolen Mangekyō Sharingan and has already modified his right arm with First Hokage cells and multiple Sharingan. When Shisui’s eye malfunctions during the Uchiha massacre, he dispatches Root operatives to the Uchiha compound. Root takes Sharingan and valuable resources despite the Hokage’s orders, while six operatives disappear inside Yuan’s office 3 4 7 64.
Apocalyptic thoughts associated with Kotoamatsukami torment Danzo until he attempts to remove his transplanted eye. His Wood Release cells then erupt uncontrollably and fuse with Yuan’s withered remains. Although he suppresses the riot, the contaminated wood enters his body unnoticed 6.
Reviewing Root’s losses, Danzo recognizes traces resembling Wood Release but rejects the possibility that an Uchiha could possess that power. An internal suggestion prevents him from examining the contradictions, leaving him unaware of his compromised judgment 7.
Political Maneuvering and Orochimaru’s Surgery
Danzo initially dismisses reports of a world-ending technique, insisting Root would already have seized any Sharingan capable of it. He also demands control over Sasuke and the Uchiha assets, but Hiruzen refuses both requests. Once the catastrophe is confirmed, Danzo blames Hiruzen’s indecision and defends his own suppression of the Uchiha as an inheritance of Tobirama’s will 10 13.
He persuades Hiruzen to disclose the disaster at a Five Kage Summit rather than immediately notifying the other villages. His purpose is to give Konoha a preparatory advantage and secure its dominance after the catastrophe 16 17.
Seeking greater personal power, Danzo offers Orochimaru restoration of his Konoha status and access to all forbidden-jutsu archives if Danzo becomes Hokage. In return, Orochimaru performs extensive Sharingan transplantation. Danzo repeatedly forbids him from resurrecting Tobirama, fearing the former Hokage would strip both him and Hiruzen of their authority 18 19.
Linked Dreams and the Amegakure Expedition
During Itachi’s Tsukuyomi confrontation with Obito, the masked figure takes Danzo’s form and confronts Itachi with countless Sharingan and memories of the massacre. Danzo subsequently awakens in Root’s base believing he has dreamed of Itachi; the precise nature of the connection remains unexplained 22 23.
A later dream shows a Rinnegan user apparently killing him. On waking, Danzo finds a powerless Sharingan in his arm and suspects the event may have been real, with Izanagi restoring him. He replaces the eye but remains disturbed by the connection to Amegakure 33.
Danzo travels there to confront the Rinnegan’s owner and demonstrate Konoha’s strength. Before meeting Pain, he exposes and kills a Root infiltrator attempting to report to Hiruzen. Pain’s repulsive force initially overwhelms him, though he subsequently fights effectively against the summoned beasts. Jiraiya ultimately insists that he withdraw, with Kakashi supporting the demand 36 39 40 41.
Battle with Hiruzen and Tobirama
After learning of Danzo’s extensive implants, Tobirama identifies him as a potential amplifier for Yuan’s ocular power and orders Hiruzen to confront him. Upon returning to Konoha, Danzo detects traces of Orochimaru in Root’s base before being summoned to the Hokage office 43 44.
Danzo rejects the accusation that he has lost control and instead argues that Hiruzen has surrendered his authority to Tobirama. He destroys the office with the Blade of Jumang, breaks an Anbu sealing formation, and draws the confrontation into the surrounding streets 45.
Because Tobirama’s reincarnated body is immortal, Danzo concentrates his attacks on the emotionally conflicted Hiruzen, forcing Tobirama to defend him. Meanwhile, withered trees spread across Konoha, and Root secures the perimeter on Danzo’s orders 46 47.
Hiruzen finally decapitates Danzo with his own wooden blade. Two implanted Sharingan close, and Kakashi and Obito experience increases in ocular power. Danzo nevertheless reappears outside the village and leaves with Root subordinates. The ensuing Withered Wood fire devastates Konoha’s reserves, and he is declared a missing-nin 47 48 51.
Campaign in the Land of Water
The Fourth Mizukage invites Danzo to join Kirigakure without conditions. Danzo treats the offer as an opportunity to seize the village and ultimately the entire Land of Water 55.
Root destroys six bloodline-limit clans supporting Genji, loots their techniques and supplies, recruits wandering ninja, and massacres the occupants of the Daimyo Palace. Danzo intends to control Yagura through Kotoamatsukami, but Obito reveals that he already controls the Mizukage. The two instead agree that Danzo will manage Kirigakure, with Danzo declaring his intention to end the Bloody Mist’s lawlessness 71.
Genji objects to sheltering a criminal wanted by Konoha. When Pain moves to free Yagura from genjutsu, Danzo confronts him and raises dead trees as all Six Paths assemble 72.
Later Appearances
- Obito, transformed into a silver skeleton, threatens Danzo, Kakashi, and Hiruzen inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 134.
- Danzo later faces Hashirama and Madara with unexpected calm 172.
Appearance
Danzo initially appears as an aging man with a bandaged face, but his cellular modifications progressively restore his youthful appearance 12 26 59.
- Right eye: Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan, normally concealed beneath a bandage 18.
- Modified right arm: Resembles tangled tree roots rather than an ordinary human limb 19.
- Body implants: Sharingan extend across his arm, shoulder, back, collarbone, and part of his torso 19 46.
- Right palm: Contains Fugaku’s left eye, later displayed as a Mangekyō Sharingan 19 45.
- Clothing and accessories: Carries a cane and wears a heavy black kasa hat when approaching Kirigakure 36 72.
Personality
Danzo justifies his actions as service to Konoha while pursuing personal authority and the Hokage position. He regards the impending catastrophe as an opportunity for village dominance, even advocating delayed disclosure so other villages remain less prepared. His contempt for the Uchiha coexists with an intense desire to appropriate their ocular power 7 10 16 18.
Following his contamination, his arrogance, confidence, and emotional coldness become increasingly pronounced. He overlooks obvious inconsistencies in intelligence and insists he has never been more sane, even as Hiruzen, Orochimaru, and Tobirama recognize changes in his behavior 7 17 18 26 45.
His confidence does not eliminate fear or calculation. The apparent death in his dream deeply unsettles him, and he withdraws from Amegakure when faced with opponents he cannot safely overcome. In battle, he exploits Hiruzen’s attachment to him rather than wasting effort against Tobirama’s immortal body 33 41 46.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Danzo combines numerous transplanted Sharingan with Shisui’s Mangekyō, using their ocular power for perception, intimidation, and mental attacks 18 19 36.
- Detects a Root infiltrator through a subtle abnormal response to his Sharingan 36.
- Subjects Orochimaru to a dangerous mental attack and genjutsu during their surgical encounter 18.
- Attempts to manipulate Kakashi, who sees through his genjutsu after his own Sharingan evolves 39.
- Plans to use Kotoamatsukami to take control of Yagura; this plan is superseded by his agreement with Obito 71.
Izanagi
His implanted eyes provide a means of surviving fatal injury through Izanagi, at the cost of the used Sharingan’s ocular power 33.
- A closed, powerless eye after his apparent dream-death leads him to suspect Izanagi was activated 33.
- Two eyes close when Hiruzen decapitates him; his subsequent reappearance establishes that the killing does not permanently remove him 47.
First Hokage Cells and Rejuvenation
First Hokage cells grant Danzo Wood Release and progressively improve his physical condition 6 12 59.
- Increased adaptation allows him to support additional Sharingan implants 12 19.
- Restores youthful reactions, movement, and vitality 36 40 59.
- The cells can riot uncontrollably and spread beyond the originally modified arm into his torso 6 18.
Withered Wood Release
After contact with Yuan’s remains, Danzo’s Wood Release becomes a decaying variant markedly different from Hashirama’s life-filled wood 6 45.
- Forms shields capable of stopping Tobirama’s Water Blade Slash 45.
- Produces roots and branches that pierce opponents, consume corpses, and obstruct outside support 36 45 46.
- Regrows rapidly enough to negate Tsunade’s repeated efforts to clear it 47.
- Absorbs chakra; once ignited, the wood sustains flames that Water Release cannot fully extinguish 48.
- Tobirama attributes the abnormal power to Yuan’s influence rather than Danzo’s aptitude alone 48.
Withered Blade / Blade of Jumang
Danzo shapes withered roots into a dark wooden blade connected directly to his arm by vessel-like structures. Fugaku’s palm Sharingan resonates with the weapon 36.
- Uses the blade to execute the exposed Root infiltrator 36.
- Releases a crimson, ocular-powered blast that obliterates the Hokage office 45.
- Combines the weapon with rapid movement to pressure Hiruzen at close range 46.
Wind Release and Taijutsu
Danzo retains effective conventional combat skills alongside his implants 40.
- Intercepts the Asura Path’s missiles with wind blades 40.
- Uses Wind Style: Vacuum Serial Waves to strike weak points in the chameleon summon’s scales 40.
- Holds his own against Pain’s summoned beasts without using his Sharingan, despite initially struggling against Shinra Tensei 39 40.
Intelligence and Political Control
Danzo directs Root through strict mental and behavioral control, supported by curse-seal methods and personal loyalty 36 46.
- Commands covert operations, resource seizures, infiltration checks, and systematic faction purges 7 36 71.
- Root members choose his side even when he openly fights the Third Hokage 46.
- Obito recognizes his expertise in internal political struggles and entrusts Kirigakure’s management to him 71.
