Background / History

Orochimaru secretly revives Tobirama using a White Zetsu sacrifice. The unusually high-quality vessel leaves him close to his former strength and allows him to break free of Orochimaru's control. Upon awakening, Tobirama immediately assesses his surroundings rather than accepting Orochimaru's account at face value. 41 49

After learning that the Uchiha clan was exterminated, that Uchiha Yuan's Mangekyō Sharingan has spread a corrupting influence, and that Danzo has become an amplifier through his transplanted Sharingan, Tobirama condemns Hiruzen and Danzo's failures. He orders Orochimaru to infiltrate Obito's side and investigate Yuan's contamination ability. 42

Tobirama confronts Hiruzen in the Hokage office, criticizes his handling of the Uchiha, and presses him to act against Danzo. He identifies Danzo's mass of implanted Sharingan as a likely conduit for Yuan's ocular power. 42 43

When Danzo escapes Konoha, Tobirama fights alongside Hiruzen. He continues investigating the Sharingan contamination with Hyuga Hiashi and the Kurama clan head. Their examination of preserved Sharingan ends in the Kurama head's death from genjutsu backlash, but leaves behind evidence of a possible second catastrophe involving a “Rabbit Goddess” and Yin-Yang Release reversal within the eyes' chakra threads. 57 58 59

Believing the Kurama clan's illusion-to-reality kekkei genkai may counter Uchiha Yuan, Tobirama takes Kurama Yakumo as his disciple. He later questions Uchiha Itachi about Yuan's contractual Mangekyō ability and Shisui's remaining eye, but prepares to eliminate Itachi despite his apparent cooperation. 62 64 After Itachi escapes through Kamui, Tobirama and Orochimaru plan to revive Uchiha Shisui as a countermeasure against Planetary Extinction. 66 70 73
