Background / History

On the night of the Uchiha clan extermination, Obito wore a swirl-patterned mask and worked with Uchiha Itachi. Itachi handled the clan compound while Obito purged the Konoha Military Police Force, killing every listed Uchiha except the clerk Uchiha Yuan. 1

Yuan caught Obito in a powerful genjutsu, exposed his own Mangekyō Sharingan, and showed him a future in which a planet annihilates the Shinobi World. Yuan’s left-eye ability temporarily strengthened Obito’s Mangekyō, restoring ocular power lost through prior use. After Yuan died, Obito removed and kept his Mangekyō Sharingan despite sensing its malice. 2 3 4

The eyes became the center of Obito’s growing instability. He sought Black Zetsu’s help to understand whether Yuan’s eyes could reverse the world-ending catastrophe, but increasingly fixated instead on creating a post-destruction world inhabited only by Rin. Itachi and Black Zetsu both suspected Yuan’s ocular power was guiding Obito’s thoughts rather than simply empowering him. 6 10 21 23

Obito tried to reclaim the Sharingan he had given Kakashi by pulling him into the Kamui dimension. Kakashi recognized him, accepted the pain behind his actions, and persuaded him that he understood his desire for Rin. The two reconciled, agreed to publicly remain enemies, and began covertly cooperating. Obito entrusted one of Yuan’s eyes to Kakashi. 23 24

Posing as Madara, Obito recruited Sasuke through his desire to avenge the Uchiha clan, then delivered him to Orochimaru for training. He also supplied Orochimaru with White Zetsu bodies and corpse materials for Impure World Reincarnation experiments. 27 28 29 31 49

Obito later developed Withered Wood Release through the interaction between his Hashirama cells, Sharingan, and Yuan’s eye. He used this power to implant Shisui’s spent Sharingan into Itachi’s forehead as a cursed third eye, intending to keep Itachi alive as a tool connected to Sasuke. 50 66

In later confrontations, Obito is depicted in increasingly altered forms: a silver skeleton within the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and later a transformed figure whose body is half-covered by Yuan’s face. He acquires eight divine tokens said to prove his divinity. 134 169

Personality

Obito is calculating, secretive, and willing to commit extreme violence to pursue his vision. During the massacre, he methodically eliminates the police-force Uchiha and maintains the persona of Madara to manipulate allies and enemies alike. 1 5 27

His defining motivation is Rin. Yuan’s influence intensifies Obito’s pre-existing grief into an obsession with erasing the Shinobi World and rebuilding it as a place where Rin can exist without conflict. Although he insists that he acts by his own will, his behavior becomes increasingly manic and possessive around Yuan’s eye. 21 22 23 67

Obito retains deep emotional vulnerability toward Kakashi. Their reconciliation relieves much of his long-held resentment over Rin’s death, and he comes to call Kakashi his only bond in the world. 24 30
