Background / History
Hank initially lived and trained with the young mutants associated with Charles Xavier. His mutation gave him unusually large, beast-like feet and enhanced running speed, but he had no major combat ability beyond that. The visible nature of his feet made him feel like a monster and left him determined to find a way to appear normal. 12 46 47
He developed a serum intended to cure his condition, but recognized that its original formula contained a critical flaw: rather than suppressing his X-gene, it would amplify it and cause further bestial changes. He sought a blood sample from Rorschach as a reference, but Rorschach refused to reveal details of his own biology and instead promised to supply samples from other mutants. Rorschach later delivered blood taken from a ninja, allowing Hank to correct the serum. 47 59 78
Hank successfully injected the improved serum, restoring his oversized feet to a normal appearance. Raven declined his offer to use the serum on her blue skin. 78
When Charles, Erik, and Rorschach split following the conflict with Shaw, Hank decisively chose to leave with Rorschach. He and Raven became Rorschach's earliest companions in the new faction. 89 90
Rorschach later entrusted Hank with planning and managing a mutant base, recognizing that Hank's value lay in science, engineering, and long-term infrastructure rather than direct battlefield work. Hank's detailed site proposal was accepted, and he became responsible for the base alongside Raven. 100 107
Appearance
Hank originally stood out because of his abnormally large feet, which he considered beast-like. He is frequently depicted wearing glasses and later uses a serum to normalize his feet. 46 78
- Originally possessed conspicuously enlarged feet. 46 47
- Commonly wears glasses while working in laboratories. 107 139
- His corrected serum removed the abnormal appearance of his feet. 78
Personality
Hank is highly self-conscious about his outward mutation and initially pursues a cure because he is exhausted by being viewed as abnormal. His desire for a normal appearance is personal rather than rooted in hostility toward other mutants; he respects Raven's refusal to alter herself. 47 78
He is hardworking, excitable about scientific discoveries, and prone to immersing himself in research for days at a time. Although frustrated by his limited usefulness in combat operations, he becomes more confident after Rorschach gives him responsibility for the mutant base and its technology. 100 107 109
Hank is notably trusting and optimistic. He argues that Ajak and Sersi should be trusted during the mutants' teleportation crisis, a trait Erik identifies as both a strength and a weakness. 286
He also believes powerful mutants have a responsibility to protect ordinary people, bringing him into repeated ideological conflict with Emma Frost. 194
Abilities & Skills
Mutant Physiology
Hank's natural mutation primarily manifests through his oversized feet and enhanced running ability. It provides little direct advantage in the team's early battles. 12 46
- Runs at superhuman speed. 12
- Originally had visibly beast-like feet, which he considered a source of shame. 46 47
- His serum restored his feet to normal size and appearance. 78
Scientific Genius
Hank is regarded as one of the world's leading scientists, with particular expertise in mutant biology, aircraft, energy systems, alien technology, and advanced engineering. Rorschach considers him irreplaceable and compares his scientific value favorably to Tony Stark's. 89 100 153
- Designs equipment for mutants whose bodies cannot withstand bullets, extreme gravity, or other combat hazards. 78
- Performs comprehensive medical examinations, including Rorschach's examination after the Holy Stone incident. 139
- Leads research teams on Krakoa and oversees advanced laboratories. 300 469
- Deciphers unfamiliar technologies by studying their mechanisms rather than relying solely on brute-force experimentation. 473 504
Aviation and Vehicle Engineering
Hank designed and pilots the Blackbird jet used by the early X-Men. He is capable of maneuvering it through severe attacks, including a massive water wave that violently destabilized the aircraft. 78 81
- Built the Blackbird fighter jet. 78
- Piloted the aircraft during missions and transported mutant teams. 81 199
- Designed protective uniforms for mutants lacking Rorschach's durability. 78
Inventions and Research
| Project | Contribution / Result |
|---|---|
| Mutation-correction serum | Identified the flaw in his first formula and developed a corrected serum that returned his oversized feet to normal. 78 |
| Siren's flight suit | Built a “bat-suit” that allowed Siren to use sonic-wave recoil for controlled flight. 46 |
| Blackbird jet | Designed and piloted the X-Men's aircraft. 78 81 |
| Mutant Growth Accelerator 2.0 | Created a portable version in two days; its test greatly enhanced Emma Frost's abilities. 109 |
| Adamantium research | Began studying Adamantium ore and weapons supplied by Rorschach. 139 |
| Energy guns | Solved the energy-source problem by channeling the Tesseract into energy guns capable of destroying a tank with one shot. 236 |
| Krakoa energy shield | Designed Krakoa's energy-shielding system around the Tesseract as its core component. 300 |
| Infinity Gauntlet and time machine | Led the development of both devices over two and a half years with additional research support. 346 |
| Power-suppression collar analysis | Cracked the collars used to suppress Raven, Miss America, and the X-Men, then removed them without damaging their wearers. 504 |
| Kryptonite conversion | Optimized the conversion of Kryptonian fragments into Kryptonite, reducing an estimated fifty-year process to three years. 510 |
| Ta Lo pendants | Decoded the real-time, shifting map concealed within Shang-Chi and Xialing's pendants. 473 |
