Background & History
CIA recruitment and pursuit of Shaw
Erik works alongside Charles Xavier in the CIA's mutant program, recruiting and assessing mutants for missions. Unlike Charles's conciliatory approach, Erik is blunt about the need to train capable mutants and remove those unable to meet operational demands. He quickly recognizes Rorschach's exceptional self-control and considers him qualified without further testing. 2
He has pursued Sebastian Shaw for years, driven by Shaw's murder of his mother. An earlier attempt to assassinate Shaw aboard a cruise ship failed and nearly killed Erik; Charles saved him from drowning afterward. 8
During the attempt to recruit Bradley, Erik confronts Sabretooth with improvised metal weapons. Sabretooth overwhelms him in the cramped house, exposing the limits of Erik's then-developing abilities. Rorschach intervenes and saves him, beginning a partnership founded on mutual respect. 5 6
Ideological conflict with Charles
Erik believes mutants must prepare for hostility from humanity and distrusts Charles's optimism about coexistence. During the debate over Angel's departure, he argues that potential security threats must be addressed before they become real; Rorschach ultimately supports erasing Angel's memories, though he criticizes Erik for excessive pessimism. 32
Erik respects Rorschach's pragmatism and repeatedly attempts to recruit him for his future group. He sees their shared willingness to use force against genuine threats as evidence that they are alike, but Rorschach refuses to regard all humans as enemies. 48 86 105
Shaw's defeat and the split
After Charles helps him unlock his potential, Erik lifts Shaw's nuclear submarine from the ocean and infiltrates it to confront Shaw directly. Rorschach ultimately kills Shaw before Erik can take revenge himself. Although disappointed, Erik considers Shaw's death the end of his lifelong pursuit. 75 80 85 86
When American and Soviet fleets attack the mutants, Erik intercepts their missiles and turns them against both fleets. Rorschach physically prevents Charles from stopping him, agreeing that those attempting to kill the mutants deserve retaliation. The attack permanently exposes the divide between Erik, Charles, and Rorschach. 88 89
Erik leaves Charles's group to establish his own faction and recruit mutants who will fight oppression directly. Raven ultimately declines to follow him, instead leaving with Rorschach and Hank. 89 90
Later leadership
As the leader of an independent mutant group, Erik continues intervening on behalf of mutants facing human authorities. During the Harlem incident, he disarms an entire police force by turning their own weapons against them and seeks to recruit Yamato. 123
He later reunites with Charles and Rorschach to fight the Decepticons, placing the survival of mutants above their previous divisions. His faction participates in the three-way mutant assembly, though its members remain notably distant from the other groups. 197 198 199
In the future conflict surrounding the Eternals and Arishem, Erik remains deeply suspicious of the Eternals' intentions. He proposes collecting the six Infinity Stones as a means of confronting Arishem. 286 288
Appearance
Erik is characterized by an untamed, intense presence, compared to a sword concealed in its sheath. In later operations, he commonly wears a helmet that protects him from telepathic intrusion. 2 104 197
- Carries a fierce, difficult-to-ignore aura even when calm. 2
- Wears a telepathy-blocking helmet during missions and negotiations. 104 197
- Is described after years of conflict as more sharp and keen than before. 123
Personality
Erik is direct, forceful, and intensely protective of mutants. He considers mutant survival more important than maintaining peace with people or institutions he believes will inevitably betray them. His readiness to retaliate against the fleets and his suspicion of the Eternals reflect a worldview shaped by expecting the worst. 88 106 286
His hatred of Shaw can override restraint. He aggressively interrogates Bradley and Mimic for information, and his determination to kill Shaw repeatedly places him in danger. 7 51 57
Despite his severity, Erik values trust and growth. He allows Rorschach to face Sabretooth while remaining prepared to intervene, asks Rorschach to train him without restraint, and accepts Charles's telepathic help when he reaches a limit. 6 60 75
Abilities & Skills
Magnetic Manipulation
Erik controls metal objects and magnetic forces with increasing precision and scale.
- Can levitate, launch, reshape, and use nearby metal as weapons or shields. 4 5 60
- Can halt bullets and missiles in midair, then redirect them at targets. 6 87 206
