History
Family Strain and Scientific Ninja Tools
Boruto’s resentment toward Naruto centers on his father’s repeated absence from family life. Despite that frustration, he forces his way into the hospital after Naruto is injured. Later, during Himawari’s birthday celebration, he arranges a family photograph and poses beside Naruto, only for his exhausted father to collapse as the camera fires 32 66.
He becomes involved in Tono Tasuke’s Scientific Ninja Tool experiments, prioritizing their destructive power over their operating principles. After Naruto’s collapse, Boruto resolves to use the tools to excel in the Chūnin Exams and attack Uchiha Chen, whom he blames for his father’s injuries 53 66.
Chūnin Exams and Momoshiki’s Attack
Boruto uses tool-generated Water and Lightning Release to defeat three Kirigakure competitors during the exams. His reliance on the prohibited equipment is exposed during his match against Yuki, and Naruto disqualifies him while allowing the fight to continue. Yuki defeats him with Wood Release and poisonous pollen 71 76 77.
Afterward, Yuki uses Sharingan genjutsu to show him Naruto’s childhood ostracism and struggle to become Hokage. Boruto realizes that he had misunderstood his father’s history and thanks her. When Momoshiki attacks Naruto, Boruto retaliates with 150 stored techniques; Momoshiki absorbs them all, substantially increasing his own reserves 78 79.
Boruto also attempts to defend Naruto with a Rasengan he had practiced in secret. Chen intervenes, and Boruto later accompanies him to the ruins of Izumo Province. During Chen’s battle there, Momoshiki attacks Boruto and implants Karma in his palm 80 84 85.
Leaving Konoha and Becoming Chen’s Disciple
After returning home, Boruto leaves a letter explaining that he intends to become Chen’s disciple and will not return until he becomes comparably strong. Sarada and Mitsuki follow him, while Momoshiki helps him locate Yuki through her previously marked chakra 96 97 100.
At Taoyuan’s entrance, Boruto withstands Yuki’s initial attempt to subdue him and kneels before Chen to request instruction. Chen arranges accommodation for the newcomers, and Boruto begins wearing the Shadow Hidden headband and a black God Robe. His first formal lesson explains Karma’s reincarnation danger and supplies a broad foundation of ninjutsu knowledge 98 99 102.
First Confrontation with Kawaki
Chen assigns Boruto a mission involving Kawaki, whose Karma resonates with his own. Kawaki demands that he return to Naruto and condemns his allegiance to Chen. Boruto refuses, insisting that Naruto remains his father while defending his choice of mentor 159 160.
Boruto defeats Kawaki through clones, elemental combinations, swordsmanship, and physical attacks. Boro and Deepa then intervene. Boro’s virus weakens Boruto until his Karma retreats and his attack on Deepa collapses; Kawaki drives a laser sword through his chest and destroys his heart 161 162 163.
Mitsuki remains behind to defend him while Sarada seeks Chen’s help. Boruto survives when Momoshiki gives up part of his own data to repair the fatal wound, producing Boruto’s Karma II transformation 163 165 167.
Joining the Uchiha Household
Himawari’s trauma leads Hikari to reconstruct her memories with Yachihoko. In those memories, Chen and Hikari adopted both siblings after their biological parents abandoned them. Boruto voluntarily takes the Uchiha surname and calls Chen “Father” around Himawari to preserve that consistent family history 235.
Boruto initially vows to restore his mother and become strong enough to support Naruto. Later, seeing Himawari happy in her new household, he decides not to entangle her life with the painful past and hopes to fulfill obligations to their birth parents on her behalf as well 235 319.
Hunting Kawaki and Later Conflicts
Chen recruits Boruto and Yuki to lead separate pursuit teams in an operation designed to force Kawaki’s Karma to thaw fully. Boruto’s team consists of Sarada and Mitsuki. Although he participates, he worries about accidentally killing Kawaki 328 329.
As the battle escalates, Boruto repeatedly protects his teammates through teleportation, swordsmanship, and Karma absorption. When Kawaki becomes an immediate threat to the group, Boruto breaks with the plan to preserve him as a Ten-Tails sacrifice: he offers himself as the replacement sacrifice and argues that stopping Kawaki takes priority 344 346 347 351 353.
Later, Boruto stops a possessed Obito from killing himself and exposes Jūki’s control. His bond with Sarada also develops into an acknowledged romantic relationship; Sasuke eventually accepts their dating and entrusts Boruto with his Kusanagi Sword to protect her 389 410 412.
Appearance
- Hair: Golden, with a shape Chen describes as pineapple-like 147 329 332.
- Shadow Hidden attire: A black God Robe modeled after Chen’s, worn with the village’s headband 102 160.
- Karma: Initially a blue diamond on his right palm; activated markings spread along his arm and onto his cheek 85 159.
- Karma II features: A light-gray horn on his right forehead, blue facial markings, and a manifested right Jōgan 167 346.
- Jōgan coloration: Blue pupil, light-blue iris, and dark sclera when manifested in combat 346.
Personality
Early Boruto is impatient and attracted to shortcuts: he dismisses Tasuke’s technical explanation and asks only whether the tools are powerful. His desire for recognition coexists with genuine affection for his family, shown by his efforts to capture a happy birthday photograph and his anger when Naruto is harmed 53 66 79.
Chen’s instruction helps him develop a more deliberate approach to combat and a clearer ambition: protecting the world from the shadows rather than merely becoming strong. He analyzes opponents’ mechanisms, safeguards teammates, and learns to distinguish power from the experience needed to use it effectively 161 163 339.
His admiration for Chen does not become unconditional obedience. He challenges the plan to keep Kawaki alive when his comrades are endangered, and later tells Sasuke that gratitude toward a mentor does not require sacrificing Sarada. He credits Chen with teaching him to think independently 347 412.
Abilities & Skills
Karma
- Chakra absorption: Absorbs Yuki’s concentrated Fire Release; its initial absorption speed is described as slightly slower than the Rinnegan’s Preta Path 98.

- Controlled transformation: By Chapter 328, Boruto can activate Karma II without fear of Momoshiki taking over his body 328.
- Early vulnerability: Boro’s virus causes his strength to fail, his Karma to retreat, and his active techniques to collapse 163.
Jōgan
- Innate potential: Momoshiki recognizes the eye’s presence before it visibly manifests, while Chen identifies it as a source of Boruto’s Ōtsutsuki potential 85 102.
- Combat perception: Combined with Karma II, lets Boruto track Daikokuten’s incoming kunai and cut them down with his sword 350.
- Limit: Boruto considers this interception his maximum capability; he cannot catch the projectiles bare-handed as Chen and Baryon Mode Naruto can 350.
Flying Thunder God Technique

- Wind Release: Uses Gale Palm to repel Kawaki and damage the growths on his arm 334.

Swordsmanship and Close Combat
- Uchiha-style swordsmanship: Combines agile movement with Purple Lightning-coated slashes capable of severing Kawaki’s limbs 332 338.
- Physical strength: His Karma-assisted kicks and grappling pressure overwhelm Kawaki during their first battle 161.
- Technique over raw power: Restrains a stronger Kawaki with a wrist lock and Chidori Stream, earning praise from Kakashi and Sasuke 338.
