Background and History
Black Tai Sui
Li Sui began as the Black Tai Sui associated with Danyangzi and Qingfeng Temple. After Danyangzi's death, Li Huowang consumed a dying Black Tai Sui to suppress his hallucinations; later, he and his companions captured another Black Tai Sui alive so that it could isolate his Illusion 24 236.
Li Huowang initially restrained the creature in his carriage and attempted to educate it by reciting the Three Character Classic and Thousand Character Classic. Its scattered repetitions gradually became clearer, and exposure to crowds improved its ability to imitate voices 314 331 334.
During the Moon Evening festival, Li Huowang made peace with the Black Tai Sui and named it Li Sui, agreeing that they would coexist for mutual benefit 332.
Adoption into Li Huowang's Family
Li Sui's tentacles repeatedly aided Li Huowang in combat, including defending him from Xin Chi and handling weapons such as the Coin Sword 339 410. Li Huowang increasingly treated her as a child, though he remained wary that her growing intelligence could eventually destabilize his own condition 408.
After a Calamity, Li Sui fused with Mantou. She emerged as a skinless, dog-faced creature whose enlarged body was supported by tentacles, retaining both Li Sui's consciousness and aspects of Mantou's instincts and memories 464 481. Li Huowang accepted her without demanding an explanation and declared her to be his and Bai Lingmiao's daughter 464.
Li Sui called Bai Lingmiao “Mother” and later developed separate maternal bonds with Bai Lingmiao and the Second God, whom she called “First Mother” and “Second Mother” 447 481 612.
Growth and Independence
Li Sui attended Oxheart Mountain Private School, eagerly learning literacy and human customs. Bai Lingmiao taught her how to bathe, wear women's clothing, and understand what it meant to be a girl 612.
Wanting to protect Li Huowang, Li Sui discovered that she could become stronger by merging with other creatures. Her first major experiment was possessing a Brown Bear, gaining enough strength to uproot a tree 669 670.
She later learned to travel independently, perform Tree Flower Smashing, draw talismans, and use human bodies as disguises. Her concern for others remained central to her actions: she tried to cheer mourning crowds with Tree Flower Smashing, rescued Chen Zhaodi from a forced marriage, and sought ways to keep Bai Lingmiao safe from the dangers of the White Lotus Sect 628 802 861 973 974.
Separation and Xuan Pin
After being separated from Li Huowang through a rift, Li Sui found herself in Daqi and eventually learned that she had been thrown roughly 180 years into the past 821 912. She sought help from Daqi's Celestial Surveillance Director, Zuoqiu Yong, who initially treated her kindly while exploiting her knowledge of future events 926 927.
Zuoqiu Yong ultimately arranged to capture and refine her. To survive over the following century, Li Sui repeatedly seized bodies and absorbed other beings' memories and abilities 928 930 958.
Li Sui eventually merged with two Directors of the Celestial Surveillance. The resulting entity became Xuan Pin, who retained Li Sui's memories but later told Li Huowang that Li Sui had died in the process and that she herself was not his daughter 958. Li Sui's funeral was subsequently held at Oxheart Village 976.
Appearance
Li Sui has no fixed body. Her form changes according to the bodies and beings she possesses, though black tentacles remain her defining trait.
- Black Tai Sui form — A mass of black tentacles able to emerge from Li Huowang's navel or mouth 331 444.
- Mantou fusion — A tall, bloody dog-faced creature with exposed bones, reverse-jointed limbs, and tentacles packed beneath a damaged raincoat 464.
- Human disguises — Uses possessed female bodies and long skirts to conceal her dog head, limbs, and tentacles; she once impersonated Princess Anping using the princess's head and body 558 628.
- Xuan Pin form — Appears beneath a red Daoist robe with dense tentacles and numerous absorbed human heads; this form is later revealed to be distinct from Li Sui herself 953 958.
Personality
Li Sui is initially simple, curious, and eager for approval. Praise from Li Huowang or Bai Lingmiao makes her visibly happy, while unfamiliar human behavior prompts direct, childlike questions 453 612 669.
Her experiences gradually give her a deeper understanding of anger, fear, death, loneliness, and family. She becomes distressed when separated from Li Huowang, fears his death, and repeatedly seeks strength so she can protect both of her parents 630 669 821.
Despite her monstrous nature, Li Sui is empathetic. She helps vulnerable strangers, worries about Bai Lingmiao's burdens, and attempts to bring happiness to grieving people even when she does not understand why her efforts fail 802 861 973 974.
