Background / History

The sect's history reaches back to the era of the Ancient Clans, but its surviving records and inheritance are severely incomplete. It has endured seven or eight historical massacres, leaving much of its original knowledge lost 191.

During an earlier calamity, the third sect master refined an ancestor's physical body into a sword-dao puppet. The puppet enabled the sect to survive the disaster and defeat its enemies, but it vanished after that sect master disappeared 174. The Third Generation Ancestor later stated that he had removed the Sword Realm key and much of the sect's inheritance during this period, remaining hidden in the Pure Land for six thousand years before returning the key 225.

The sect also suffered a long decline after its Heavenly Sword was stolen and its spiritual energy was drained. Ancestor Master Lin Yun awoke from a century-long slumber, learned that the Demon Sect leader had taken the sword to resurrect a demon lord, and resolved to restore the sect 171.

By the time Gu Du Wudi became sect master, the Heavenly Sword Sect was repeatedly targeted by rival sects, Heaven Ranking experts, demons, Ancient Clans, and Outer Region forces. Under Gu Du Wudi and Lu Chen, it survived these crises and regained major influence 173 241 249.

Headquarters and Defenses

• Mountain-guarding formation — A vast formation that creates a star-filled expanse of dense sword qi. It was activated while Gu Du Wudi refined a Dao Fruit, but Master Yun Kong destroyed it with his Divine Skill of Silent Meditation 173.
• Ancestor's physical body — A sword-dao puppet containing immense power and Level 5 fire-attributed Sword Intent. Lu Chen controlled it during the Heaven Ranking experts' assault, though his own strength initially limited how much of its power he could draw out 172 174.
• Ancestor's Divine Sword and underground seal — A massive, chained divine sword stands in the sect's depths above a grand coffin. It had suppressed a Demon King for thousands of years 212.
• Enlightenment Pavilion — A cultivation site within the sect used by Qing Lian for seclusion 176.
• Sword Array — Lu Chen deployed sword arrays around the sect to deter and restrain hostile intruders 336.

Secret Heritage

Heavenly Sword Scripture

Lu Chen originally came to the sect seeking the Heavenly Sword Scripture, a powerful cultivation manual. The sect refused to hand it over despite his overwhelming defeat of its leading disciples and sect leader Su Xing 70.

Heavenly Sword Sect Sword Heart

The sect's Sword Heart is described as a Divine Heart rather than merely a higher level of Sword Intent. A cultivator who attains it can master martial arts upon seeing them, derive sword techniques from observed phenomena, and reach the Heavenly Sword realm through the principle that all things in heaven and earth may become swords 172.

Sword Realm

The Sword Realm is where the essence, energy, and spirit of deceased sword practitioners gather. The Third Generation Ancestor returned its key to Lu Chen, regarding it as part of the Heavenly Sword Sect's rightful inheritance 225.

The Third Generation Ancestor also suspected that the soul of the sect's first-generation ancestor remained within the Sword Realm 230.

Major Incidents

Heaven Ranking Siege

When news spread that Gu Du Wudi was refining a Dao Fruit, numerous Heaven Ranking experts and Northern Barbarian Grandmasters attacked the Heavenly Sword Sect. The mountain-guarding formation delayed them, while Lu Chen used the ancestor puppet to confront the invaders 172 173.

The attackers believed the sect was facing annihilation, but Gu Du Wudi emerged from seclusion and defeated the invading Heaven Ranking experts. The sect then began retaliating against long-standing enemies, including the Sword Sect and associated families 179.

Demon King's Escape

The Demon King imprisoned beneath the sect eventually broke free from the grand coffin beneath the Ancestor's Divine Sword. It demanded Gu Du Wudi's appearance, but Lu Chen faced it as the sect's successor and killed it 212 213.

Myriad Manifestations Heavenly Sect Conflict

The Myriad Manifestations Heavenly Sect dispatched Dharma Aspect Realm elder Li Wanhun to destroy the Heavenly Sword Sect and capture Qing Lian. Lu Chen and Gu Du Wudi, both revealed to be Dharma Aspect Realm cultivators, severely wounded Li Wanhun and killed his accompanying Golden Body Realm experts 240 241.

Qing Lian was later abducted during another attack. Lu Chen retaliated by breaking through the Myriad Manifestations Heavenly Sect's formations, demanding her release and compensation for the Heavenly Sword Sect's losses 268 273 274. After Lu Chen defeated Hei Ming, the sect released Qing Lian and provided compensation 275.

Four Vows of Yin Mountain Assault

The Peacock King ordered the Four Vows of Yin Mountain—four Dharma Aspect Realm demon kings—to eradicate the Heavenly Sword Sect because of Lu Chen's killing of the Young Flood Dragon King 248.

The demons devastated the sect's rear mountains and severely injured Gu Du Wudi. Lu Chen returned in time to instantly kill the Bloodthirsty Crow and Three-Headed Lion, while Gu Du Wudi continued fighting despite his injuries 249.

Holy Land of Auspicious Beginnings

Members of the Space-Time God Clan identified the sect's location as the Holy Land of Auspicious Beginnings, an ancient land of extraordinary fortune. They claimed that any force occupying it would ultimately overcome calamities and return to prominence at the center of the starry sky 336.

Lu Chen could not use karma to examine the grounds fully, as the sect's ancestral land was shrouded in a divine aura that obscured attempts to pry into it 337.

Later Era

After Lu Chen's three-hundred-year absence, the Heavenly Sword Sect remained intact and had become the foremost sect on the planet. Dugu Wudi's prior use of a Sword Talisman had made later Outer Region forces unwilling to covet its territory 380.
