Nature and Origins

Evil Spirits are formed from humanity's negative emotions. Their appearances vary drastically, from shadows and humanoid monsters to multi-eyed crawling creatures and towering horned beings 21 22 34 73.

They are drawn to vital energy and flesh. A weakened mother Evil Spirit attempted to ambush Ling Yun after giving birth because it needed flesh and blood to replenish itself; Ling Yun later exploited this instinct by releasing his blood energy as bait while hunting them 24 102.

The Demon Suppression Division detects Evil Spirit activity through the Spirit Net, a mid-grade Spirit Artifact capable of covering all of Cloud City. Detection personnel assess the threat and dispatch Demon Subduers accordingly, though concealed or symbiotic entities can cause inaccurate assessments 26 101.

Evil Spirits have no shared physical form. Their bodies often reflect their individual nature, and some can appear human enough to conceal their identity.

• Bai Ji manifested as a tall, beautiful woman in white with waist-length snow-white hair, but her aura was chaotic and saturated with malice 14.
• Ma Xiu's captured Spirit appeared as a translucent black, slime-like creature after conversion from a Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit 25.
• A crawling Evil Spirit attracted by Ling Yun's blood energy had countless moving eyes embedded across its face and moved on all fours like a spider 34.
• The Six-Armed Evil Spirit resembled an uncoordinated mountain of flesh, with three rotting arms on each side of its body 151.
• The Ox-Demon possessed enormous ox-like horns, copper-bell eyes, and a body large enough to create a vortex in the clouds while emerging from black mist 73.

Evil Spirits are attracted to dense blood energy and use flesh and blood to restore themselves.

• The mother Evil Spirit targeted Ling Yun after becoming severely weakened by the Ghost Infant's birth 24.
• Ling Yun can lure Evil Spirits by spreading his own blood energy, causing them to approach him voluntarily 102.
• The Shi Family's invading Evil Spirits became more dangerous after absorbing large amounts of blood energy from their victims 151.

Corruption and Possession

An Evil Spirit's negative emotions can corrupt a human host.

• Demon Suppression Envoys normally suppress an Evil Spirit's emotions before using it as a Spirit, but severe injury can cause the suppression to fail 25.
• A host permanently controlled by an Evil Spirit becomes a Demon Spirit, a being driven to kill 25.
• Humans who directly absorb complete Evil Spirits can retain their sanity and gain immense power, but prolonged exposure makes them increasingly irritable and extreme 25.

Some powerful Evil Spirits recover from otherwise decisive injuries.

Containment and Conversion

A captured Evil Spirit can be transformed into a Spirit, a controllable weapon used by Demon Suppression Envoys.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Cloud City Incidents

Evil Spirits first become a confirmed supernatural threat through Bai Ji's appearance and the Demon Suppression Division's operations in Cloud City 14 21. Ma Xiu's team initially confronts a low-level Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit, only to discover that it concealed the far more dangerous Ghost Infant 21 23.

Ling Yun kills both the mother Evil Spirit and the Ghost Infant, then learns from Ma Xiu that Evil Spirits are manifestations of negative emotions and the basis for the Spirits wielded by Demon Suppression Envoys 24 25.

Mount Taiyin and the Ox-Demon

The Mount Taiyin temple crisis escalates from disappearances and hostile monks into a conflict involving the Ghost-Masked Buddha, Bai Ji, ghouls, and the summoning of the Ox-Demon 45 68 70 73.

Bai Ji's desperation causes her to merge with her Evil Spirit, while the Ox-Demon emerges as a top-tier Fiend-Grade threat. It is temporarily sealed, but remains alive and is later used by the Demon Suppression Division as bait for the Celestial Fiends 73 75 83 162.

Wang Yuan severely injures the Ox-Demon but cannot destroy it outright because of its incomplete Evil-Grade demonic aura 164 166. Its final fate is unknown after the Battle of Mount Taiyin 201.

Shi Family Massacre

Shang Buyu directs four Evil Spirits against the Shi Family in revenge. The invasion kills the Fifth Elder, overwhelms the family's Intent Conduit martial artists, and forces Shi Gongyuan and Fire Ape to retreat 149 151 152.

After the Shi Family abandons the guests, Ling Yun intervenes, kills a Two-Headed Evil Spirit in one slash, and then eliminates the remaining three with Thousand Machines 154 155. Shang Buyu is later identified as the mastermind behind the incident, though her power had been supported by Shang Mu 157 158.

Luoyang City Hunts

By Chapter 250, Ling Yun regularly hunts Evil Spirits throughout Luoyang City at night. The city experiences appearances frequent enough to trouble its major factions, including multiple Fiend-Grade Evil Spirits encountered by Ling Yun 250.
