Role and Authority
Demon Suppression Envoys are Spirit Envoys who have joined the Demon Suppression Division, a special force founded by the first emperor of the Great Radiance Dynasty. The Division exists to preserve dynastic stability and holds the authority to act first and report afterward, earning it the title of the “Son of Heaven’s Sword.” 17 99
Their legal authority and unusual powers make them one of Cloud City’s three principal forces alongside the government and martial arts halls. They are widely regarded as arrogant and difficult to challenge. 17
- Envoys commonly operate at night, when they can track and suppress Evil Spirits more effectively. 21
- Their work includes investigating supernatural incidents, locating Evil Spirits, dispatching suppression teams, and dealing with corrupted Envoys. 45 101
- The Division maintains an internal hierarchy headed in Cloud City by Wang Yuan, the Grand Envoy. 18 81
- Envoys may be assigned to squads and brigades under captains such as Qin Wei. 29 45
Rank and Power Scale
Demon Suppression Envoys are ranked in reverse numerical order, from Nine-Star at the bottom to One-Star at the top. 17
| Rank | Documented benchmark | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nine-Star | Lowest rank | A low-level Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit may require three Nine-Star Envoys to suppress. 101 |
| Eight-Star | Comparable to a Spirit Conduit martial artist | Can handle ordinary Mortal-Grade Evil Spirits; still relies on refining spiritual energy within the body. 17 25 55 |
| Seven-Star | Comparable to a Bloodforging Realm martial artist | Can draw upon ambient spiritual energy, making the step from Eight-Star a qualitative leap. 55 |
| Six-Star | Comparable to a Celestial Origin Realm martial artist | Can begin Spirit Fusion, though excessive use risks loss of sanity or corruption. 76 182 206 |
| Five-Star | Comparable to a Limit Breaking Realm martial artist | A level of expert power; Duanmu Xue is identified as a Five-Star Division expert. 206 252 |
| Three-Star | Top-tier expert level | Even the weakest Evil-Grade Evil Spirit is comparable to a Three-Star Envoy. 166 |
| One-Star | Highest rank | No individual One-Star Envoy is documented in the available accounts. 17 |
Recruitment and Spirit System
Becoming an Envoy requires an inborn special bloodline. Fewer than one in a hundred people possess the necessary talent, which reduces the mental influence exerted by Evil Spirits. 17 25
The Division’s combat system centers on Spirits: Evil Spirits whose negative emotions have been suppressed and which have been turned into controllable weapons. Most Envoys possess only a Mortal-Grade Spirit; Fiend-Grade Spirits are rare. 25
- A Spirit is not fully safe: severe injury to its host can break the suppression and allow the Evil Spirit to seize control. 25
- An Envoy corrupted by their Spirit is called a Demon Spirit and is to be eliminated without mercy due to the danger posed by uncontrolled corruption. 25
- Most Envoys can safely fuse with only one Spirit; exceptionally gifted individuals may handle several. 25
- Some unorthodox practitioners absorb complete Evil Spirits rather than suppressed Spirits. This can grant greater power and the ability to fuse directly with the Evil Spirit, but it carries a far greater risk of madness and permanent corruption. 25
- Spirit Envoy families emerged in part to preserve these bloodlines, and some refuse marriage with ordinary people. 25
Abilities and Techniques
Spirit Manipulation
Envoys borrow power from, release, or—at higher levels—fuse with their bound Spirits.
- Spirits may manifest as independent combatants or specialized tools. Releasing a Spirit exposes the Envoy to backlash if that Spirit is injured. 191
- Spirit Fusion removes suppression and merges the Spirit into its Envoy, potentially producing power greater than the sum of both parts. 191
- Fusion is a last resort: a weakened Envoy may lose control of their consciousness and become an Evil Spirit or Demon Spirit. 182 191
Demon Extinction Stance
A coordinated formation technique used by multiple Envoys to concentrate spiritual energy into a golden phantom.
- Three Seven-Star Envoys can combine their power with ambient spiritual energy to create a golden, three-headed, six-armed phantom capable of restraining a Bloodforging Realm martial artist. 54 55
- Larger groups can channel their spiritual energy through leading Seven-Star Envoys, producing a more powerful and defined phantom. 59
- The technique is also used to expose concealed enemies and suppress targets through overwhelming pressure. 170
- Qin Wei’s comrades attempted an Illusion-Shattering Mode when ordinary combined attacks failed. 59
Specialized Spirit Abilities
Individual Envoys may possess highly varied abilities depending on their Spirits.
- Shadowfiend — Ma Xiu’s Mortal-Grade Spirit can split into hundreds of shadows, pass through cracks, and search a wide area. Its scouting ability is unusually strong, but it cannot remain separated from him for long. 21
- Envoys have demonstrated elemental and anomalous attacks, including fire, earth spikes, corrosive poison mist, spectral phantoms, spiritual-energy chains, and lightning. 46 54 71 168
- Spirit-based abilities are highly situational; even coordinated Envoys can be overwhelmed by stronger Evil Spirits, ghouls, or martial artists. 54 71 75
Equipment and Resources
- Spirit Artifacts — Artifacts inscribed with special effects and used by some Envoys; not every Envoy possesses one. 39 56
- Spirit Removal Dagger — A patterned dagger used to test whether a target is an Evil Spirit or an ordinary human. It does not react to normal human blood. 46
- Explosion talismans — Used with formations to delay large monster hordes. 185
- Positive and Negative Edict — A combined artifact used to create a passage through the white mist on Mount Taiyin. 185
- Great Five Elements Demon Subjugation Formation — A powerful formation borrowed by Wang Yuan for the Mount Taiyin operation. 162
- Imperial Pinnacle Tower — The nine-story core building of the Demon Suppression Division in Cloud City; access to its inner areas is restricted even for low-ranking Envoys. 18
Organization and Operations
The Division uses white-robed detection personnel to identify Evil Spirit presences, estimate their grade, and recommend an appropriate force. The resulting intelligence is recorded, relayed to brigades, and assigned to squads for suppression. 101
| Threat | Recommended response |
|---|---|
| Low-level Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit | One Eight-Star Envoy or three Nine-Star Envoys 101 |
| Mid-level Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit | One to two Eight-Star Envoys 101 |
| Ordinary Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit | Eight-Star Envoy or Spirit Conduit martial artist 25 |
| Fiend-Grade Evil Spirit | At least one Six-Star Envoy to contend with it reliably 72 |
| Evil-Grade Evil Spirit | A major disaster; even the weakest is comparable to a Three-Star Envoy 166 |
Notable Incidents
Cloud City Detentions
The Division forcibly took Ling Yun and Zhang Mu from the Black Tiger Martial Hall after seeking them out in Cloud City. Following an internal investigation, it determined they were merely victims of Situ Mu’s actions and released them. 17 18
Mount Taiyin Temple Investigation
After multiple suppression teams disappeared at Mount Taiyin’s ancient temple, Qin Wei led a larger team to investigate. The mission exposed the Envoys to an eerie temple, hostile monks, internal suspicion, and the threat of a powerful Evil Spirit. 45 46 47
Qin Wei’s Corruption
Qin Wei turned on his own team after using the Spinal Fiend Sword to absorb Blood Essence and regarding his comrades as potential “blood food.” Ma Xiu, Wen Qin, Xu Huang, and other Envoys eventually opposed him despite uncertainty over whether he was an Evil Spirit in disguise. 58 59
Battle of Mount Taiyin
The Division mounted a major operation at Mount Taiyin to deal with the Ox-Demon Evil Spirit and lure out the Celestial Fiends. Wang Yuan deployed the Great Five Elements Demon Subjugation Formation, while Envoys defended sub-formations against Ghost King Hall forces, Celestial Fiends, bronze soldiers, monster hordes, and hidden infiltrators. 161 162 166 170 185
The operation caused severe losses, but Qin Wei repeatedly reorganized surviving Envoys, restored morale, and directed the remaining defenses. 181 182 185
