Background
The Demon Suppression Division was personally established by the first emperor during the founding of the Great Radiance Dynasty. Its stated purpose is preserving dynastic stability, and it possesses the exceptional authority to act first and report afterward—an authority described as the “Son of Heaven’s Sword.” 17
In Cloud City, it stands alongside the government and martial arts halls as one of the city’s three principal powers. Unlike the government and martial halls, which generally maintain a workable balance, the Division is widely feared for its strength, broad authority, and willingness to act without restraint. 17
Its reputation is reinforced by the unusual techniques of its envoys, who use Spiritual Energy, Spirits, talismans, formations, and Spirit Artifacts against supernatural threats. 17 47 54
Organization and Rank System
| Position / Rank | Function and known details |
|---|---|
| Grand Envoy | City-level leader. Wang Yuan commands Cloud City’s Division, disciplines captains, assigns major operations, and personally confronts high-level Evil Spirits. 18 121 162 166 |
| Supervisor | Commands the four to five squads that normally comprise a city’s Demon Suppression Division. 30 |
| Captain | Leads a squad; Qin Wei serves as captain of the First Team and directs subordinate envoys during field operations. 30 164 182 |
| Vice-Captain | Deputy position within a squad, offered to Ling Yun during Qin Wei’s recruitment attempt. 30 |
| Demon Suppression Envoy / Demon Subduer | Field personnel who detect, suppress, contain, or destroy Evil Spirits and other supernatural threats. Small groups generally contain three to six members. 17 30 |
| Nine-Star to One-Star | The Division’s rank scale runs from lowest Nine-Star to highest One-Star. 17 |
| Eight-Star | Eight-Star Demon Subduers can handle ordinary Mortal-Grade Evil Spirits; an Eight-Star Envoy is broadly comparable to a Spirit Conduit martial artist. 17 25 |
| Seven-Star | A qualitative advancement over Eight-Star: Seven-Star Envoys can draw upon ambient Spiritual Energy rather than relying only on energy refined within their bodies. 55 |
| Three-Star | Rare top-level experts within the wider Division; even the weakest Evil-Grade Spirit is comparable to a Three-Star Envoy. 166 |
Recruitment and Spirit System
To become a Demon Suppression Envoy, a person must possess an inborn special talent: a bloodline that reduces the mental corruption caused by Evil Spirits. Such talent is rare, reportedly appearing in fewer than one person out of a hundred. 17 25
Spirits
A Spirit is a controllable weapon created by suppressing an Evil Spirit’s negative emotions rather than destroying the Evil Spirit outright. This allows envoys to wield Evil Spirit abilities while retaining some measure of control. 25
- Evil Spirits are classified as Mortal, Fiend, Malevolent, and Nightmare grade. 25
- Most envoys possess Mortal-Grade Spirits; Fiend-Grade Spirits are considered uncommon. 25
- Ma Xiu’s Mortal-Grade Spirit, Shadowfiend, splits into hundreds of incorporeal shadows to search streets, buildings, and cracks for hidden Evil Spirits. 21
- A Spirit’s suppressed negative emotions can reassert themselves if its host is severely injured, potentially turning the envoy into a murderous Demon Spirit. 25
- Demon Spirits are treated as threats to be destroyed without mercy due to the scale of harm a corrupted envoy can cause. 25
Unorthodox Evil Spirit Fusion
Some cultivators reject the controlled Spirit system and directly fuse with complete Evil Spirits for greater power. While a few retain their sanity, most become mentally corrupted and eventually turn into Demon Spirits. 25
- Direct fusion can produce beings that are partly human and partly Evil Spirit. 25
- Orthodox Demon Suppression Envoys abandoned this practice because prolonged exposure to complete Evil Spirits causes irritability, extremism, and loss of control. 25
- Qin Wei’s use of the forbidden Spinal Fiend Sword demonstrates that prohibited Blood Artifacts can also corrupt or endanger their wielders and allies. 57 58
Operations and Resources
Surveillance and Dispatch
The Division uses the Spirit Net, a mid-grade Spirit Artifact capable of sensing Evil Spirit activity across Cloud City. Detected presences are assessed by location and estimated grade before missions are assigned to appropriate teams. 26 101
- Surveillance Hall personnel wear white robes embroidered with eye patterns and monitor Evil Spirit signatures throughout the city. 101
- Their reports recommend force levels based on threat grade, such as one Eight-Star Demon Subduer for a low-level Mortal-Grade Evil Spirit. 101
- Information is passed to brigades, which dispatch squads to investigate or suppress the threat. 101
- The system prioritizes safety, though initial assessments can miss concealed or unusually powerful Evil Spirits. 101
Detention and Discipline
The Division operates the Black Jail, a black-stone prison lined with torture devices and special-material bars. It holds detained suspects in harsh conditions, including prisoners reduced to vacant, corpse-like states. 18
Internal discipline is severe. Wang Yuan has deducted salaries, confined captains to the Dark Pool, stripped an envoy’s Nine-Star title, and reassigned offenders to the Outer Task Force. 121
Spirit Artifacts and Restricted Materials
- Spirit Artifacts are special weapons refined from Evil Spirits and range from low-grade to high-grade. 26
- The Division tightly controls Spirit Artifact circulation in Cloud City and suppresses unauthorized private sales. 31
- Ghost Cores are prohibited from private trade; even internal person-to-person transactions are forbidden and violations carry severe punishment. 213
- The Divine Weapon Pavilion is part of the Division’s infrastructure and handles Spirit Artifact forging and modification. 96
- Soulchaser is one of the Division’s few mid-tier Spirit Artifacts: a dark-golden chain intended to pursue and bind targets beyond ordinary physical escape. 115
Formations and Talismans
The Division employs talismans and formations for large-scale suppression, battlefield control, and defensive operations. 47 162 185
- The Great Five Elements Demon Subjugation Formation consists of five sub-formations and one main formation. 162
- Wang Yuan borrowed a weakened replica for the Mount Taiyin operation; it was said to kill any intruder below Six-Star rank once activated. 162
- The outer sub-formations strengthen defenders, while destroying the sub-formations or main core can collapse the larger formation. 162 164
- Qin Wei ordered thousands of pre-planted Detonation Talismans to delay enemy forces at Mount Taiyin. 164
- Smaller defensive formations can be assembled under pressure, though they demand sustained Spiritual Energy from the envoys maintaining them. 185
Facilities
| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Imperial Pinnacle Tower | The Division’s central Cloud City facility. Its nine floors are heavily restricted, and the ninth floor serves as Wang Yuan’s inner office and meeting area. 18 |
| Black Jail | A prison and torture facility for detainees of the Division. 18 |
| Demon Suppression Hall | Meeting hall where captains and envoys discuss mission assignments, internal disputes, and operational shortages. 102 |
| Surveillance Hall | Monitoring center that identifies Evil Spirit presences and routes reports to the field brigades. 101 |
| Divine Weapon Pavilion | Spirit Artifact forging and refinement facility. 96 |
Relationships
- Great Radiance Dynasty — Creator and governing authority; the Division was founded by the first emperor and exercises exceptional imperial enforcement powers. 17
- Cloud City Government — Fellow dynastic institution, but relations are poor despite both operating under the Dynasty. 17
- Martial Arts Halls — A major local power bloc that generally avoids provoking the Division due to its authority and supernatural methods. 17
- Ling Yun — Initially detained with Zhang Mu, later repeatedly recruited by Qin Wei and Wang Yuan; Ling Yun refuses formal membership while participating in several Division-led operations. 18 30 81 82
- Celestial Fiends — Hostile faction targeted by the Division; the Mount Taiyin operation uses the sealed Ox-Demon as bait to draw them into battle. 135 162
- Ghost King Hall — Hostile force whose agents infiltrate and attack the Mount Taiyin defenses. 170 173
