Background & History

Irisviel is an Einzbern artificial human, Emiya Kiritsugu's wife, and Illya's mother. Before the Fourth Holy Grail War, she explains the properties of the scabbard of the legendary Holy Sword: as a conceptual weapon, it can heal injuries and halt its wearer's aging. 1

She enters the Fourth Holy Grail War as the Einzbern side's visible Master while Kiritsugu operates covertly. After Mikaela is summoned in place of Artoria, Irisviel accompanies him to Fuyuki City, where she becomes both the public face of the faction and his primary companion. 2 3 41

In Fuyuki, Irisviel personally challenges the Church's claim that Assassin had withdrawn and confronts Risei and Kotomine Kirei. She later helps Mikaela pressure and mislead Tohno Shiro into investigating the Church and the Matou family. 4 5 10

As Servant souls accumulate within her, Irisviel's connection to the Greater Holy Grail worsens her physical condition. Mikaela temporarily activates Avalon within her by transforming into Artoria and supplying matching mana, relieving her pain without removing the underlying danger. 34

Though she had accepted that becoming the Lesser Holy Grail would kill her, Mikaela ultimately removes her artificial heart—the Lesser Holy Grail—and places it within himself. This frees Irisviel from her intended fate and allows her to survive. 13 48

After awakening, Irisviel experiences the corrupted Greater Holy Grail directly and warns Kiritsugu that it must not descend. She identifies its magical power as filled with negative emotions rather than the pure, colorless energy a wish-granting Grail should contain. 49

Three years later, Irisviel reunites with Mikaela and joins Kiritsugu in the Romanian Holy Grail War, where they seek the Grail Core needed to heal Illya.
