Background & History
Kiritsugu entered the Fourth Holy Grail War as the Einzbern family's Master and Irisviel von Einzbern's husband. Known as the Magus Killer, he approached the war as a military operation: Servants were tools, intelligence was decisive, and victory outweighed honor. Using Artoria's scabbard as a catalyst, he expected to summon the King of Knights, but instead contracted with the unrecorded Saber Mikaela. Despite Mikaela's poor initial parameters and lack of a Noble Phantasm, Kiritsugu retained him and immediately began assessing how to use his concealed potential. 1 2
Kiritsugu and Mikaela developed an effective partnership through their shared preference for ambushes, misdirection, intelligence gathering, and targeted assassinations. Kiritsugu deliberately had Mikaela reveal limited strength so rival Masters would underestimate Saber, while he and Maiya Hisau mapped enemy threat levels and sought ways to turn Masters against one another. He considered Kotomine Kirei his most dangerous opponent because Kirei's motives could not be predicted, then reassessed Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald as an even greater danger when he suspected deeper schemes. 4 5 8 20
Though he initially committed himself to winning for the greater good, Kiritsugu's time with Mikaela forced him to confront his wish to protect Irisviel and Illya instead. He ultimately resolved to continue the war even if it required Irisviel's sacrifice, but later chose Irisviel's life over the Holy Grail when Mikaela offered to replace her role as the Lesser Holy Grail. When the corrupted Grail unleashed its mud, Kiritsugu chose to save as many people as possible. 13 48 49
Three years later, Kiritsugu re-entered a Holy Grail War in Romania after learning that Illya could not live normally without the Greater Holy Grail's core. He reunited with the surviving Mikaela, summoned Archer Red A, and coordinated a faction focused on removing uncertain threats before confronting Vlad III. After the war, he and Irisviel used the Grail's core to heal Illya and seal her magic, memories, and knowledge so she could live as an ordinary child. 60 64 69 97 112
Afterward, Kiritsugu adopted Emiya Shirou, intending for him to inherit the Emiya magecraft and protect Illya after Kiritsugu's death. He also debuted under the name Gen Urobuchi, becoming a successful light novelist and manga artist after Illya criticized his stories as less exciting than magical-girl programs. 104 105 112
During the Grand Order Incineration, Kiritsugu manifested as a Servant alongside Irisviel and joined the wider resistance against the Demon God Pillars. 134 210
Personality
Kiritsugu is cold, pragmatic, and relentlessly analytical. He evaluates enemies according to how easily they can be killed, deceived, or exploited, and he considers reliable intelligence the foundation of victory. His preferred method is to wait like a viper and strike only when a decisive kill is possible. 1 20
His ruthlessness is tempered by concern for civilians and an increasingly powerful attachment to his family. He rejects strategies that needlessly endanger innocents, struggles with the prospect of sacrificing Irisviel, and abandons retirement when Illya's condition requires him to fight again. 12 13 60 61
Abilities & Skills
Strategic Planning and Intelligence Work
Kiritsugu treats the Holy Grail War as an intelligence war before it becomes a direct battle.
- Identifies enemy vulnerabilities, hidden alliances, and threat levels before committing to an attack. 8 20
- Uses deception to provoke conflict between opposing Masters, including plans to implicate or bait Tohno Shiro and Kayneth. 8 20
- Coordinates divided operations, assigning Mikaela to confront Servants while he handles Masters and logistical threats. 24 36
- Maintains caution around unfamiliar Servants and seeks interrogation targets rather than simply eliminating every enemy. 67 71
Assassination and Firearms
As the Magus Killer, Kiritsugu specializes in killing Masters from concealment rather than fighting Servants directly.
- Operates from prepared vantage points with firearms aimed at enemy Masters. 6
- Plans attacks around escape routes and the likely retaliation of enemy Servants. 6
- Is willing to use hired agents, surveillance, explosives, and indirect methods when direct involvement would expose his side. 12 24
Time Alter
Kiritsugu can accelerate his own time to evade lethal attacks.
- Used Time Alter at five times normal speed to avoid a volley of magical arrows. 71
- The technique places extreme strain on him, but Avalon’s protection enabled him to push beyond his usual limits. 71
Command Seal and Contract Management
Kiritsugu uses his authority as a Master decisively and treats magical contracts as strategic assets.
- Used a Command Seal to recall Mikaela when Diarmuid's intervention made continued combat dangerous. 36
- Acquired technology capable of separating mana supply from Command Seal authority, allowing Illya to become Mikaela's Master while Kiritsugu retained the seals. 19
- Refused to contract another Servant in Romania when his physical condition and mana burden became too severe. 84
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Artoria's scabbard — Used as the catalyst for Mikaela's summoning; its legendary healing and anti-aging properties depend on its owner's mana. 1
- Avalon — Resided within Kiritsugu after Mikaela infused it with Artoria's mana, protecting him from fatal injury during the Romanian war. 71
- Firearms — His primary tools for eliminating enemy Masters from range. 6
- Camera and surveillance photographs — Used to investigate Matou Kariya and Sakura's connection to the Matou family. 12
Relationships
- Irisviel von Einzbern — Wife and Fourth Holy Grail War partner. Kiritsugu's desire to protect her and Illya conflicts with his broader ideal of saving the many. 1 13 48
- Illyasviel von Einzbern — Daughter. Her inability to live normally drives Kiritsugu to enter the Romanian Holy Grail War and seek the Greater Holy Grail's core. 60 61 112
- Mikaela — Initially his Saber-class Servant, later a trusted ally and the person Kiritsugu calls the savior of his family. Their shared strategic mindset makes them highly compatible partners. 2 13 60 112
- Maiya Hisau — Right-hand woman and operational partner. She assists his intelligence work, monitors his physical condition, and is entrusted by Irisviel to care for him after her death. 8 13 20
- Emiya Shirou / Red A — Kiritsugu later adopts Shirou to protect Illya; in the Romanian war, he summons Archer Red A, who is identified as Emiya Shirou. 64 112
- Kotomine Kirei — A dangerous adversary whom Kiritsugu considers difficult to predict. Kirei becomes fixated on understanding Kiritsugu's purpose and wish. 5 24 43
- Marisbury Animusphere — Obtains information from Kiritsugu after the Romanian war; Kiritsugu recognizes Marisbury as rational yet insane, resembling his former self. 112
Trivia
- Kiritsugu habitually reaches for cigarettes while thinking or under stress, but Mikaela, Maiya, Irisviel, and later Shirou repeatedly stop him from smoking. 12 174
- His decision to become a novelist and manga artist began as a response to Illya calling his stories boring. 104 105
- As a Servant, he finds that his increased thought and typing speed lets him write for far longer than he could as a human. 218
