Background

Nawaki is the grandson of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, and the younger brother of Tsunade. He grew up amid the Senju Clan’s decline, with Tsunade and Nawaki among the few Senju still active outside the clan compound. Despite this decline, he had access to guidance from Tsunade, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and his grandmother Uzumaki Mito. Before Chen’s rapid improvement, Nawaki was stronger than him in taijutsu. 5 37

At the Ninja Academy, Nawaki met Uchiha Chen after placing behind him in the entrance race. He was pressured by his lineage and the expectation that he would uphold the Senju family, yet he approached Chen with curiosity rather than clan hostility. 6

He concealed the arrival of his distant Uzumaki relative, Kushina, from Chen at first, showing protectiveness toward his new “little sister.” Tsunade later took him to the Land of Earth for intense training; he returned heavily bandaged but still boisterous. 34 47 48

Nawaki is loud, competitive, and self-assured. He can recognize when others outclass him, but often immediately undercuts that humility with exaggerated confidence or jokes. He is deeply protective of Tsunade and distrustful of Kato Dan’s pursuit of her, going so far as to ask Chen to secretly follow her. 213 His affection for Yakushi Nonō is more awkward: he tried to confess to her, only to be caught waiting outside a bathhouse after following her there. 378
