Background

Ross entered Soul Society under an identity arranged by Aizen: the descendant of a fallen minor noble family who had ended up in the Rukon District. The noble identity gave him a practical route toward captaincy through assessment, recommendation, or—within the Eleventh Division—direct challenge. 473

The Central 46 Chambers invited him to become Captain of the Tenth Division. Ross initially regarded the position as troublesome, but Rangiku Matsumoto persuaded him by emphasizing its income and relatively relaxed duties. 475 476

Before formally taking office, Ross used money to secure support within the division. He obtained 20 million rings from Aizen and distributed roughly 15 million among the Tenth Division's members according to rank, immediately winning over most of the squad. 477
