Background / History
Tom grew up at Wool's Orphanage, where he used uncontrolled magic to move objects, command animals, and hurt people who annoyed him. Believing fear to be true power, he tried to make Li Weide his “pet.” Li stopped Tom's telekinetic attack, immobilized him with superior magic, and established the fearful but formative power dynamic between them 2 9.
Albus Dumbledore later revealed that Tom was a wizard and invited him to Hogwarts. Tom was eager to learn spells and grow stronger, but remained suspicious, commanding, and openly interested in using magic against others 9 10. He was sorted into Slytherin, where his fame and orphan background made him a target for Pure-blood students, including Abraxas Malfoy 66 68.
Tom initially measured worth by strength and openly regarded Li as superior, resolving to become “the most extraordinary one beneath him.” His ambition drove him toward defensive magic, dueling, forbidden knowledge, and the Dark Arts, including the Killing Curse 42 94. Li's influence, however, repeatedly redirected him toward cooperation, family, friendship, and restraint.
He learned that Merope Gaunt was his mother and that his father, Tom Riddle Sr., was a Muggle who had been controlled with a love potion. Though initially ashamed of being a half-blood, Tom ultimately rejected blood-purity thinking and chose not to blame himself for his parents' history 123 124. His relationship with the Riddle family became increasingly important; when the family was attacked, he tried to investigate and protect them despite the danger 176 179.
Tom's exposure to the Cruciatus Curse and Salazar Slytherin's legacy forced him to confront the cost of Dark Arts. He became disgusted with Slytherin's methods, began valuing love and friendship, and eventually stopped using Dark Arts altogether 215 502. His ability to cast a Patronus became the clearest sign of this change.
In a parallel world without Li Weide, Tom witnessed the future he might have become: Lord Voldemort. The revelation devastated him, but also confirmed how Li had altered his path. Tom declared that he was still Tom Riddle, but no longer destined to become Voldemort 546 547.
Personality
Tom is intensely ambitious, proud, competitive, and obsessed with becoming stronger. As a child, he treated fear as the basis of authority and was willing to manipulate others—such as provoking Draco Malfoy and his friends against Li—to obtain revenge 2 65.
He respects power rather than denying it. After Li defeats him, Tom does not pretend equality; he openly gives Li first choice of valuable books because the stronger person has earned that right 42. This reverence can turn into insecurity, especially when he compares his magical strength to Li's.
Despite his early cruelty and attraction to Dark Arts, Tom is capable of loyalty, concern, and self-reflection. He worries for the Riddle family during the attack on their manor, seeks to understand his parents rather than simply punish them, and comes to respect Dumbledore 124 176 550. He becomes increasingly wary of Li's manipulation but continues to trust and follow him in major decisions 225 502 556.
