Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and Yu Tianheng's uncle. Having been dismissed since childhood because of his cultivation limitations, he devoted himself to martial-soul theory in order to prove his worth through knowledge rather than personal strength. 20 23

He left the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and refused Yu Tianheng's request to return until he could prove himself. His stated ambition was to make his disciple Tang San the continent's strongest soul master and the living proof of his theories. 20

Yu Xiaogang later became involved with Liu Erlong and Flender, forming a close trio. His past relationship with Bibidong, and the controversy surrounding his relationship with Liu Erlong, remained sources of shame, resentment, and conflict. 138 142 150

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man recognizable by his distinctive grooming and subdued presence.

  • Crew cut and thick beard. 19

  • In later years, Tang San notes that he has gained wrinkles and gray hair. 286

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is proud, highly defensive of his theories, and deeply sensitive about his low cultivation. He can regain an outwardly calm manner after losing composure, but challenges to his expertise repeatedly provoke anger, humiliation, or despair. 23 24 169

He is also devoted to Tang San, initially viewing him as both his direct disciple and the proof that would vindicate his life’s work. Even after their relationship deteriorates, Yu Xiaogang continues to interpret Tang San’s success as connected to his own teaching. 20 202 391

His pride often prevents him from accepting help or confronting uncomfortable truths. Flender’s criticism eventually pushes him to seek assistance from his father and reconsider his estrangement from the clan. 147
