Background / History

Roger was one of the most renowned pirates of the Rocks era. At God Valley, he led the Roger Pirates into the conflict expecting Rocks and the World Government to exhaust one another, while remaining eager to create further chaos himself 15. His presence drew immediate hostility from Rocks, Shiki, Whitebeard, Kaido, and Garp alike 17.

During his search for the Poneglyphs, Roger arrived at Ohara seeking someone capable of reading Ancient Script. There he recruited Nico Olvia, whose archaeological knowledge became vital to his voyage toward the final island 89.

Roger later travelled alongside Roa, who provided the fourth Road Poneglyph rubbing needed to locate Laugh Tale. The Roger Pirates reached the island, discovered the Great Treasure, and completed an unprecedented circumnavigation of the world 196 198.

Roa convinced Roger to accept the title of Pirate King, publicize the Great Treasure, and ultimately surrender after a one-year interval. Roger agreed to the arrangement, intending to use his remaining life to push the world into a new era 199 201.

At God Valley, Roger wore a captain's horned hat and had only light facial stubble rather than a full mustache 15.

Personality

Roger is exuberant, impulsive, and drawn to freedom. He laughs readily in dangerous situations and would rather create a “huge ruckus” than pass up an opportunity for adventure 15. He rejects Shiki's attempt to control him because doing so would mean no longer being a free pirate 85.

Beneath his recklessness, Roger is protective of his crew and family. He refused to escalate Charlotte Linlin's pursuit because he considered himself responsible for stealing her Road Poneglyph, disbanded his crew to reduce the danger around them, and arranged for Rayleigh to protect Shanks and Buggy 188 201. Knowing his illness would kill him, he chose surrender and his final public declaration as a way to entrust the future to the next generation 215 219.

Roa photographs Roger and the treasure, then has Morgans spread the news worldwide. Roger's completed voyage earns him the title of Pirate King and makes the existence of Laugh Tale and the Great Treasure known across the seas 200 201.

Disbandment and Final Duel

With his terminal illness worsening and the world targeting his crew, Roger disbands the Roger Pirates. One year later, he confronts Roa after witnessing the suffering caused in Roa's territory; Roa ultimately wins their brutal battle but has Roger treated rather than killed 201 211 213 214.

Surrender and Death

Roger voluntarily surrenders to the Marines to negotiate protection for his former crew. At Logue Town, he uses the public execution to announce that his treasure remains at Laugh Tale, triggering a new age of piracy.
