Background and History

Imu originally followed Joy Boy in the struggle against Davy Jones. After secretly allying with Jones, Imu manipulated him into renewed destruction, then killed him and claimed credit for saving the world. Imu subsequently turned public opinion against Joy Boy, seized the Heavenly King and amassed an army of ability users. Joy Boy died after Imu threatened to destroy the world with Ancient Weapons if he continued resisting 354.

For roughly eight hundred years, Imu ruled from behind the World Government. The Five Elders and God's Knights treated Imu as their supreme authority. Imu could punish subordinates by withdrawing the power sustaining them, as demonstrated when Thomas was reduced to a skeleton 121 162 287.

Imu's conflict with Roa escalated after their encounter at Logue Town, where Imu fought through a possessed woman. Roa escaped with Kaido and Golden Lion; Imu then punished the Five Elders and Figarland Gehring and ordered Roa's death 223 224. During a later confrontation, Roa forced Imu to appear in person, but could not defeat Imu's true body and retreated 283 284 285.

After Roa's forces devastated Mary Geoise, their newspaper exposed Imu as the World King. The Government acknowledged Imu's existence while claiming the founding king had retired—a claim Roa's side disputed 286 293. In the final battle, Roa overcame Imu's transformed state and turned Imu into a Ghoul under his control 352 354 356 357.

Appearance

Imu usually conceals their appearance beneath a black robe and tall crown. Roa tears away the hood during their final confrontation, revealing a face that he believes may belong to Queen Nefertari D. Lily; his suggestion that Imu took Lily's body is not established as fact 162 349.

Imu demands obedience and responds harshly to failure: Thomas is killed, while the Five Elders and Gehring are tortured after Roa escapes Logue Town 121 224. In battle, Imu initially dismisses Roa as beneath them, but becomes increasingly desperate as his strength grows. Facing defeat, Imu asks for peace and then offers their abilities in exchange for survival 223 349 356 357.
