Background / History

Mayuna was born in Dris roughly twenty years before the opening of the story. Her snow-white hair and ruby-red eyes resembled the “White Demon” of church legend, causing townspeople and other children to fear and ostracize her. Her parents, adventurer Mikael and healer Mayouji, nevertheless loved her and raised her carefully. 1

When Mayuna was five, her parents left to investigate a newly appeared labyrinth and never returned. Left in the care of Dris’s church, she lost her home to a local bully and endured further isolation. She eventually fled to a mountain hut, where Saint Mage Yura found her near starvation and took her as a disciple. 1

Under Yura, Mayuna cultivated into the first Archmage. Yura deliberately taught her to develop her own judgment and principles, fearing that unchecked power could make her a catalyst for war. After Yura died in the Demon Realm, Mayuna withdrew emotionally from nearly everyone around her. 14 32

At the beginning of the novel, Mayuna is afflicted with a curse later identified as tetanus. Believing herself near death, she returns to Dris and her childhood mountain hut, where she encounters Ruben, a human with no detectable magic power. Ruben treats her with science-based medicine and saves her life, beginning their long-term partnership. 1 2 5

Mayuna later learns that her appearance is inherited from her clan rather than being a curse. Her mother reveals that the Mo clan descends from intelligent monsters created by the Moonlight Goddess; their ancestor chose to live as a human and adopted the surname “Mo.” Members of the clan naturally possess Saint-level power in adulthood and can become gods through training. 379 380

Mayuna is a petite young woman with waist-length snow-white hair and clear ruby-red eyes. Her distinctive appearance is considered both extraordinarily beautiful and unsettling because of its resemblance to the White Demon legend. 1 23

Personality

Mayuna is proud, willful, and highly conscious of her status as an Archmage. Having spent much of her childhood isolated and much of her training focused entirely on cultivation, she initially struggles with ordinary social interaction and often expresses herself through demands, teasing, or sulking. Ruben’s indulgence allows the more childlike side she never got to experience to emerge. 6 8

Despite her selfish streak, Mayuna holds firmly to her core principles. She is intensely protective of people she considers hers, particularly Ruben, and reacts ruthlessly when they are threatened. Her grief at believing Ruben dead drives her to cast a forbidden spell and eliminate Akedaisi, the abduction’s mastermind. 14 32

Mayuna is deeply sensitive about her appearance because of the discrimination she suffered in Dris. Ruben’s willingness to adopt her white-haired, red-eyed appearance helps her confront this insecurity, and her visit to Dris eventually restores her confidence in her beauty. 22 23

Her affection for Ruben develops from gratitude and companionship into love, but she is possessive and jealous of women close to him—especially Chiyo. She openly considers Ruben her greatest happiness, while still refusing to easily accept the idea of sharing him. 128 369 381 523
