Background
Aqua initially lived as an apparently ordinary mermaid in Ruby's lake. Mayona immediately recognized her as a Sea Tribe mermaid, while also noticing Aqua's blue eyes, blue hair, ear fins, shell covering, and pale-blue fishtail. Aqua used the name of the Water Goddess despite Mayona's warning that Sea Tribes would not normally dare give that name to a descendant. 9 10
Ruby relied on Aqua's purification magic to maintain the lake and clean poisonous water left behind by the Poison Dragon. Although she complained about the exhausting work, Aqua repeatedly agreed when tempted with food or Ruby's attention. Ruby also refused to relocate from the lake because moving Aqua without a secure aquatic habitat would put her at risk. 21
When Ruby planned to send her back to her people, Aqua refused to be separated from him and angrily struck him with her tail. She later traveled to find him on her own by enclosing herself in moving water spheres, motivated by loneliness and her desire to see him again. 35 92
Aqua's true identity became central during the crisis surrounding the Mermaid Kingdom. Empress Mia revealed that Aqua's real name was Aqualala and that Mia was her aunt; Aqua had been missing from her people for nearly two years. Aqua eventually encountered the Water Goddess within a shrine and learned that the Goddess was her past self. 275 330
Her past self had sealed divine power across multiple underwater shrines as part of an “adventure game.” After recovering the power stored in the first shrine, Aqua regained a human form, accepted that she was the Goddess's reincarnation, and publicly returned as the Water Goddess. 331 332
Appearance
Aqua is a beautiful blue-haired mermaid whose original form combines a human upper body with aquatic traits. Following her divine awakening, she gains human legs and is later commonly seen in a blue dress. 9 332 543
- Long blue or sky-blue hair and blue eyes. 9 541
- Pale-blue fins on her ears. 9
- Pale-blue fishtail in her mermaid form. 9
- Initially wears shells over her chest rather than conventional clothing. 9
- Gains human legs after recovering divine power from the shrine. 331 332
Personality
Aqua is impulsive, food-motivated, affectionate, and frequently described by others as foolish. She eagerly pursues Ruby, once declaring herself his “first wife,” and is easily persuaded into difficult work when he suggests finding another mermaid instead. 21 98
She is also mischievous and prone to taking credit for others' accomplishments, such as accepting praise for the Lava Turtle's defeat. Her lack of resolve is a serious weakness in battle: Sloth Aura easily overwhelms her, and she has forgotten to use elementalization when under pressure. 326 515
Despite her immaturity, Aqua is compassionate. She opposes killing the Lava Turtle unnecessarily, apologizes to the Sea Tribes for the Mermaid Tribe's past oppression, and becomes more willing to prioritize her followers over her desire to remain with Ruby. 322 327 333
Abilities & Skills
Water Magic and Purification
Aqua is an exceptionally capable water mage whose purification ability is valuable enough for Ruby to build specialized facilities around her. 21
- Can create water arrows and manipulate water offensively. 10
- Purifies contaminated water sources and rapidly clears ordinary muddy water. 21 260
- Cannot fully remove every remnant of Poison Dragon toxins; poisonous crystals remain after purification. 21
- Produces large volumes of water to fill artificial ponds and lakes. 260
- Travels over land inside a self-propelled water sphere, though prolonged use makes her dizzy. 92
Divine Water Authority
After recovering her divine power, Aqua can command water on a far greater scale than before. 332 515
- Forms water shields strong enough to block Mayona's hammer strike. 332
- Announces her return directly to believers across the Endless Sea. 332
- Perceives the Sea Tribes' activities and requests remotely. 333

- Can unleash a magically amplified steam explosion and form mercury into attacking dragons. 515
Limits
- Her combat effectiveness drops when she is far from water or other liquids. 515

Goddess Persona and Leadership
Aqua successfully performs the role of the Water Goddess before the gathered Sea Tribes, aided by Ruby's coaching and intimidation tactics. 320 321
- Her performance convinces the Sea Tribes to accept her authority. 321 322
- Publicly accepts responsibility for the Mermaid Tribe's mistreatment of other Sea Tribes. 322
- Takes on requests from numerous tribes, though she initially accepts more obligations than she can manage. 322 323

Forbidden-Spell Legacy
Aqua's past self is credited with creating the water-element forbidden spell Aqua's Repentance, which transforms everything inside a water sphere into water. The earlier Aqua's Wrath reportedly caused a catastrophic tsunami that harmed Aqua's own side as badly as her enemies. 32
