Nature and Rank
Sainthood stands beyond the Quasi-Saint realm and marks the highest recognized level of cultivation within Honghuang. Saints possess authority and power far beyond ordinary immortals, and their interventions can alter the course of conflicts between major factions. Hongjun demonstrates Saint-level methods by removing cultivators from Zixiao Palace with a gesture and later reversing an imminent killing through time reversal. 6 28
The Sage realm has numbered “heavens” that indicate further advancement after ascension. Sect Master Tongtian reaches the third heaven upon becoming a Sage, while Fuxi later rises to the sixth heaven. 179 237
Paths to Sainthood
Hongjun teaches three formal methods of proving the Dao and attaining Sainthood. 25
| Method | Requirements and process | Documented results |
|---|---|---|
| Law Proving | A cultivator explores a Law to its ultimate limit and proves the Great Dao through that Law. 25 | The Twelve Ancestral Witches pursue this route due to their innate mastery of Laws; they later become Quasi-Saints through Law Proving. 25 69 |
| Slaying Three Corpses Proving | The cultivator severs the Good, Evil, and Obsession Corpses, preferably using high-grade spiritual treasures; the treasure’s quality affects the corpses’ strength. 25 46 | Hongjun states that he attained Sainthood through this method. Fuxi successively severs his Good and Evil Corpses before planning to merge all three. 25 46 96 165 |
| Merit Proving | Heavenly Dao Merit propels cultivation and can assist the fusion of the three corpses and Hongmeng Purple Qi. 122 185 | Nuwa becomes a Sage after her corpses merge under Merit, while Yuanshi Tianzun attains the second heaven of the Sage realm after founding the Heavenly Origin Sect. 122 185 |
“There are three methods of attaining Sainthood and proving the Dao.”
— Hongjun 25
Sage Classifications
| Classification | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Dao Sage | A Sage empowered through the Heavenly Dao. Their cultivation relies heavily on Heavenly Dao Merit, and continued advancement requires performing meritorious deeds in accordance with the Heavenly Dao. 306 |
| Great Dao Sage | A self-cultivated Sage, also called a Hunyuan Grand Unity Golden Immortal. This path requires the cultivator to create and stabilize an independent world before completing Dao attainment. 171 187 |
| Dual Great Dao and Heavenly Dao Sage | Fuxi is the first documented being to hold both statuses simultaneously. His prior Great Dao-level Hongmeng Purple Qi allows him to become a Heavenly Dao Sage without relying on Hongjun’s Hongmeng Purple Qi. 199 |
Great Dao Sages are not subject to the Heavenly Dao’s direct discipline, unlike Heavenly Dao Sages. However, those unable to withstand the Heavenly Dao’s limits must leave Honghuang if they seek to challenge them. 355

Authority and Influence
- A Saint’s methods can decisively override lesser cultivators; Hongjun teleports the Grand Unity Golden Immortals from Zixiao Palace with a flick of his finger. 6
- Hongjun halts Eastern Emperor Taiyi’s attack on Eastern Prince Gong by reversing the combatants’ movements, a phenomenon Fuxi identifies as time reversal. 28
- The title of a Saint’s disciple functions as political protection: Jieyin and Zhunti treat their connection to Hongjun as a deterrent against enemies. 8
- Saintly status can legitimize sects and institutions. Yuanshi Tianzun founds the Heavenly Origin Sect during his ascension, while Fuxi later establishes the Xuantian Sect and opens it to disciples from multiple factions. 185 202
- A Saint’s sermon is regarded as a major cultivation opportunity; immortals from the Heavenly Immortal realm to the Quasi-Saint realm gather to hear Fuxi teach. 239 240
Limitations
- Hongmeng Purple Qi is treated as a crucial qualification for conventional ascent through the Three Corpses or Merit paths. 84 122
- By the time Fuxi preaches at Buzhou Mountain, he considers Sage-level instruction largely impractical because Honghuang no longer possesses Hongmeng Purple Qi or vacant Sage positions. 240
- Heavenly Dao Sages cannot reliably improve through secluded cultivation alone; Nuwa finds that her growth depends on Merit, which is ultimately power granted by the Heavenly Dao. 306
- Even powerful quasi-saints remain vulnerable to Saint-level force. Fuxi’s ability to destroy Yuanshi Tianzun’s Outer Incarnation while still a Quasi-Saint is treated as unprecedented. 195 196
