Background / History
Sakonji Urokodaki was the active Water Pillar during his prime. While on a mission near a dark swamp, he found an abandoned infant, failed to locate the child’s family, and ultimately adopted and named him Kurozawa Danryu. He raised Kurozawa as his first direct disciple, even bringing the child along on Demon Slaying Missions rather than leaving him in another’s care. 2 59 86
As a cultivator, Urokodaki trained a Mount Sagiri lineage in Water Breathing, including Kurozawa, Makomo, Sabito, Giyu Tomioka, Iguro Obanai, and Hanada Shizuka. He delayed Kurozawa’s Final Selection until the younger disciples were old enough to attend, allowing them to go as a group. 2 4 11
Before the Final Selection, Urokodaki entrusted Kurozawa with the Nichirin Blade that had accompanied him for forty-seven years. He later welcomed all fourteen returning disciples and, after learning of the dangerous Hand Demon on Mount Fujikasane, concluded that the mountain’s long-standing demons required periodic clearing rather than continued use as novice trials. 10 29
Following the selection, Urokodaki resigned as Water Pillar. Citing his aging body and declining ability to sustain high-intensity combat, he chose to continue fighting by cultivating new swordsmen for the Demon Slayer Corps. 29 48
Urokodaki remained deeply concerned by Kurozawa’s increasingly chaotic, inhuman aura, yet repeatedly chose trust over suspicion because of their lifelong bond. When Hongyue arrived at Mount Sagiri, he initially attacked her after recognizing her as the Red-Clothed Female Demon responsible for killing the Flame Pillar; she quickly disarmed and wounded him, exposing the gap created by his age. 10 29 82 83
By the time of the Asakusa conflict, Urokodaki had died by suicide. Ten years later, Kurozawa visited his grave on Mount Sagiri. 157 179
Appearance

Personality
Urokodaki is taciturn, serious, and demanding toward his disciples. He speaks bluntly, particularly when warning them about the fatal risks of Demon Slaying, but his severity is rooted in experience and concern rather than indifference. 4 9 10
He believes that Demon Slayer Corps swordsmen must become strong through repeated life-and-death struggles, recognizing that most recruits are ordinary people facing predators naturally stronger than themselves. 10
Despite his discipline, Urokodaki is deeply paternal toward Kurozawa. He raised him from infancy, worried over every dangerous mission, and could not bring himself to strike him down even when he feared Kurozawa might become a demon. 4 29 82 86
“I don't know what happened to you, but I choose to believe you, and I also hope you can maintain your human emotional side.” 10
