Background

Kanae and her younger sister, Shinobu, lost their parents in a demon attack. The Stone Pillar saved the sisters and taught them Breathing Techniques for a time. Although the Flame Pillar Shinjuro Rengoku offered to take them in as successors, they were not suited to Flame Breathing and ultimately trained under ordinary cultivators instead. Rengoku's warmth and straightforwardness remained important to Kanae throughout her life. 70 79

Kanae passed the Swordsman Trial three years before meeting Kurozawa Danryu and had already become the Demon Slayer Corps' Flower Pillar by that time. She regarded Kurozawa as an unusually promising Water Breathing practitioner despite not knowing his name, describing his imposing physique and aura to Kagaya Ubuyashiki. 13 14

Kanae is a beautiful young woman whose gentle, approachable demeanor often obscures the fact that she is an elite Demon Slayer Pillar. She wears the Demon Slayer Corps uniform with the gold buttons denoting a Pillar and a light-purple haori. 62 75

Following Kurozawa's annihilation of the Iguro Family, Kanae is sent to Mount Sagiri to hold him accountable. Rather than immediately handing him to human authorities, she offers him a chance to atone by investigating the disappearance of swordsmen in Lotus Town. 63

Yoshiwara Investigation

Kanae accompanies Kurozawa to the Yoshiwara Pleasure District, where they identify Warabihime as Daki. To enter Kyogoku House without stealing money, Kanae reluctantly poses as a potential courtesan and gains access to the establishment. 72 73

She confronts Daki as the Flower Pillar, defeats her sashes with Crimson Hanagoromo, wounds her with Peony of Futility, and eventually beheads her. Gyutaro's ambush forces Kanae to activate Higan Suzume Eye, after which Kurozawa joins the battle. 76 77

Lotus Town and the Eternal Paradise Cult

Kanae enters Doma's Sacred Selection to investigate the Eternal Paradise Cult from within. Selected by Doma alongside six other women, she later attacks him with Higan Suzume Eye active while Kurozawa handles the cult's forces and Gyutaro. 99 104 107

Doma's ice-based Blood Demon Art proves especially dangerous to her because it attacks the lungs required for Breathing Techniques. Kanae refuses to abandon her sword, inhales ice crystal dust, and is eventually frozen and sealed by Doma. Kurozawa later frees her from the ice. 111 112 121

Break with Kurozawa

Kanae returns alone to Demon Slayer Corps headquarters after the Lotus Town incident, grieving over what she witnessed. After isolating herself for several days, she tells Kagaya that she will fight Kurozawa without hesitation when they meet again. 158

During Kurozawa's assault on the Corps, Kanae activates Higan Suzume Eye and attacks him despite knowing the disparity in their power. Kurozawa breaks her blade and attempts to end the battle painlessly, but an external blade light dissolves Kanae before his strike reaches her. 166 167
