Appearance
Gengar is a round, dark purple Ghost-type Pokémon with short limbs, sharp white teeth, and an unusually serene presence. Its evolution left it with golden eyes rather than the species’ usual red ones; at Elite Four level, its eyes, back spines, ears, and tail also became gold. 68 625 910
- Golden pupils, sometimes described as golden-red. 68 392
- Purple-black skin and a row of neat white teeth. 625
- Often clasps its hands in a Buddhist rite rather than grinning mischievously. 220 457
- In Mega Evolution, it develops a third golden eye and has a lower body connected to a dimensional space. 227 393
Personality
Gengar initially retained a mischievous, swaggering personality after evolving, but Master Mingguang’s influence gave it an increasingly calm, disciplined, and meditative disposition. It regularly practices Calm Mind, performs Buddhist rites, and can endure long periods of solitary training. 68 226
Its serenity does not erase its pride or cunning. Gengar is sensitive about being controlled too closely in battle, wanted to prove it could prevail through its own strength against Sableye, and refuses to consider itself merely “Buddha-like.” 227 896
Gengar is deeply loyal to Moyan. It habitually hides in Moyan’s shadow to protect him, helps him regain focus in battle, and can communicate complex reconnaissance through Ralts’ telepathy. 247 733 784
Abilities & Skills
Ghost- and Poison-type Combat
Gengar possesses broad attack coverage but primarily relies on Ghost-, Poison-, Psychic-, and Dark-type techniques in battle. 16 482
- Fires Shadow Ball in barrages, including eight- and sixteen-projectile volleys. 220 993
- Uses Toxic followed by Venoshock to exploit poisoning; Venoshock’s power is doubled against poisoned targets. 227 650 821
- Can use Destiny Bond to take down an opponent after being defeated. 132
- Uses Grudge to reduce an opponent’s usable move frequency by draining their energy reserves. 373
- Known moves include Nightmare, Dream Eater, Curse, Mean Look, Trick Room, Pain Split, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Focus Blast, and Dark Pulse. 482 733 735
Hypnosis
Gengar’s Hypnosis is a major control tool, particularly after acquiring the Hypnosis Pendulum on Mt. Pyre. 223
- The pendulum enabled it to put the highly vigilant Weavile to sleep in three seconds. 223
- Developed Shadow Hypnosis, using shadows to make Hypnosis more difficult to evade. 614
- Uses Hypnosis tactically against opponents dependent on visual techniques such as Foresight. 523
- Hypnosis becomes less reliable against opponents with strong Mental Power and willpower without the pendulum’s enhancement. 223
Spatial Power
After obtaining residual spatial energy associated with Palkia, Gengar developed abilities far beyond those of an ordinary Gengar. 373 482
- Creates Space Barriers that block attacks, conceal allies, and prevent detection by Psychic-type scans. 613 784 993
- Can hide in dimensional space, traverse between real and dimensional space, and infiltrate solid structures. 784 954
- Learned to use Space Lock to repair space rifts and absorb the remaining spatial energy. 921
- Later became capable of autonomously creating spatial rifts and Space Slash-like offensive techniques. 954
- Its spatial energy separated and sealed a Spirit World Entrance, though the effort left it exhausted. 373
Mega Evolution
Gengar’s Mega Evolution first succeeded during its battle against an Elite Advanced Sableye. 227
- Mega Evolution grants a defensive energy shell during transformation, preventing interruption. 227
- Its transformed form greatly enhances Speed and Special Attack. 278 393
- Mega Gengar’s Ability becomes Shadow Tag, though Ghost-types are unaffected by it. 228
- It can revert automatically after adapting to its Mega Evolved form. 228
Buddhist Intent
Gengar’s golden eyes and tranquil temperament stem from the special influence it received during evolution. 68 226
- Its internal energy wards off the resentful, negative energy of Mt. Pyre. 226
- Can generate golden will-o’-wisps that provide illumination without the usual Ghost-type gloom. 625
- Used “Buddha words” to counter Gorebyss’s Supersonic and make it faint. 734
- Absorbed the Buddhist intent of Master Mingguang and other Bell Tower monks to recover and advance. 788
Divinity of Space-Time Travel
Gengar absorbed the Gleaming Green Light Divinity found beneath Moonlight Swamp and began integrating with its attached space. 1028 1029
- Can open a Space Gate to locations with clear spatial coordinates deeply fixed in its memory. 1029
- The gate initially lasts ten minutes and requires a three-hour cooldown. 1029
- It cannot initially pass through its own Space Gate, though the ability is expected to mature as it integrates the Divinity. 1029
- The Divinity grants Gengar an infinite lifespan and further strengthens its Spatial Power. 1029
Equipment / Items
- Hypnosis Pendulum — A physical pendulum obtained on Mt. Pyre; Gengar wears it on its head and uses it to substantially enhance Hypnosis. 223
- Mega Evolution Stone — Resonates with Moyan’s Keystone to trigger Mega Evolution. 227
- Gleaming Green Light Divinity — Integrated into Gengar, granting an attached space, infinite lifespan, and developing Space-Time Travel. 1029
History
Evolution in Ecruteak City
Before evolving, Haunter was trained toward a “killer” role built around concealment, reconnaissance, and decisive attacks rather than indiscriminate violence. 16 Moyan arranged its evolution in Ecruteak City using a Dusk Stone and moonlight, with Lin Bai and Master Mingguang reinforcing the unusually intense process through their special powers. 68
The evolution produced a golden-eyed Gengar with greatly improved Ghost-type Talent, a Buddhist-influenced nature, Cursed Body instead of Levitate, and the inherited moves Destiny Bond and Clear Smog. 68 69 Though it lost Levitate, its gaseous body still allowed it to float. 69
Mt. Pyre Training
At Mt. Pyre, Gengar became Moyan’s primary battler, repeatedly fighting Ghost-type Pokémon until exhaustion before being withdrawn to recover. 225 Its special energy protected it from the mountain’s resentment, allowing it to train there daily without corruption. 226
After acquiring the Hypnosis Pendulum, it refined its Hypnosis and used the item as a natural extension of its fighting style. 223 Its prolonged training culminated in a battle against an Elite Advanced Sableye, where it finally accepted Moyan’s guidance and achieved Mega Evolution. 227 It then reached Elite Advanced in its base form. 228
Ghost Ship and Spatial Growth
On the Ghost Ship, Gengar followed a mysterious calling into a painting and absorbed its special energy while Moyan’s other Pokémon held off a Ghost-type horde. This raised its Ghost-type Talent to Elite Four level. 276 285
It later used the spatial energy gained there to close a Spirit World Entrance alongside Dusclops. 373 Repeated work repairing spatial rifts further changed its understanding of Spatial Power, eventually allowing it to create rifts and use offensive spatial techniques independently. 921 954
Bell Tower Recovery
After suffering a severe depletion, Gengar was restored by the collective Buddhist intent of Master Mingguang, Xuanlu, and the Bell Tower monks. It absorbed enough intent to exhaust nearly every monk present, then stabilized at Pseudo-Elite Four Peak. 788
Inheritance of Divinity
While investigating Moonlight Swamp, Gengar found a Divinity Space and chose to absorb the Gleaming Green Light Divinity after considering Gardevoir’s advice and Moyan’s assurance that the choice was its own. 1028 1029
The Divinity granted it a private attached space, infinite lifespan, stronger Spatial Power, and the beginning of Space-Time Travel. Gengar elected to remain in that space temporarily to integrate the inheritance, leaving Moyan with a spatial gate mark for future reunions. 1029
Relationships
- Moyan — Trainer and closest partner. Gengar protects him from within his shadow, trusts his battle commands, and remains one of his most dependable scouts. 227 247 784
- Master Mingguang — Assisted in Gengar’s evolution and indirectly gave it the Buddhist-influenced energy that wards off evil. His later Buddhist intent also helped restore Gengar. 68 226 788
- Lin Bai — Helped facilitate Gengar’s evolution in Ecruteak City; Gengar later defeated Lin Bai’s own Gengar in an autonomous dimensional-space duel. 68 954
- Zoroark — Longtime teammate and stealth partner. Gengar recognizes Zoroark even through Illusion and protected it from exposure during an infiltration mission. 613
- Gardevoir — Advised Gengar to accept the Divinity and explained the risks of inheritance. 1028 1029
- Sableye — A powerful Mt. Pyre rival whose battle triggered Gengar’s first successful Mega Evolution. 227 228
