What appeared before Chen Feng was a creature that looked like a dog, but was about as large as a pig.
It was covered in golden fur, with two little drooping ears and a pair of large deep-blue eyes that blinked gently, its gaze soft and tender.
Chen Feng rather liked this chubby little ball of fluff.
He had always dreamed of awakening an external living-creature-type Beast Spirit like this, but unfortunately, his wish had not come true. In the end, he had awakened "a lifeless piece of inorganic trash with no aesthetic beauty whatsoever."
Now that he saw Luo Sanpao, Chen Feng was immediately interested. He reached out and gave Luo Sanpao a couple of good rubs, roughly examining the condition of the only external Beast Spirit on the continent.
Then, he asked:
"Grandmaster, since the day you awakened your Spirit, has Luo Sanpao's size ever undergone any major changes?"
"It has." Grandmaster nodded.
"I mean without anyone else's Support."
"Then no."
"I see." Chen Feng nodded, indicating that he understood.
After thinking for a moment, he continued asking:
"Grandmaster, under what conditions did Luo Sanpao's size undergo such a major change?"
Grandmaster hesitated. "When I formed a Martial Soul Fusion Skill with others, Luo Sanpao would evolve into the Golden Sacred Dragon."
"The Golden Sacred Dragon? I heard there was once a group called the Golden Iron Triangle whose Martial Soul Fusion Skill summoned the Golden Sacred Dragon. Grandmaster, were you one of them?" Chen Feng asked with a surprised expression.
"Yes." Grandmaster nodded expressionlessly.
"Then you must have been the Horn of Wisdom among them?" Chen Feng asked.
Grandmaster fell silent for two seconds. "That was all in the past. There's no point in bringing it up."
Tang San and Xiao Wu looked at Grandmaster in surprise. Neither of them had expected this somewhat dispirited middle-aged man before them to have once possessed such a glorious past.
"Grandmaster, you may have misunderstood me. I have no intention of prying into your past. I only want to find a solution to Luo Sanpao's problem from it."
Chen Feng released Luo Sanpao, his expression turning solemn.
"Since the Golden Iron Triangle's Martial Soul Fusion Skill summons the Golden Sacred Dragon, what I want to ask is this: whose consciousness controls the Golden Sacred Dragon in that Martial Soul Fusion Skill?"
"Mine," Grandmaster answered.
"Then what is the primary Spirit that makes up the Golden Sacred Dragon?" Chen Feng pressed.
"Luo Sanpao."
"In other words, in the Golden Iron Triangle's Martial Soul Fusion Skill, the other two people's roles are both to strengthen Luo Sanpao. Am I correct?" Chen Feng continued.
"That's right, but what does that prove?" Grandmaster still did not quite understand. "Only after being strengthened can Luo Sanpao become the Golden Sacred Dragon. Normally, it undergoes no changes at all. Any Soul Master becomes stronger after receiving reinforcement from a Support Soul Master. What is so special about that?"
Chen Feng countered, "Then when other Soul Masters are strengthened, do their Spirits undergo such enormous changes?"
Grandmaster was immediately left speechless.
Chen Feng continued, "Since Luo Sanpao can undergo such a drastic transformation after you form a Martial Soul Fusion Skill with the other two, that means Luo Sanpao itself has potential. It has merely remained so weak because certain conditions have not yet matured.
"So, as long as we analyze the specific roles played by the other two, we can find a way to treat Luo Sanpao. Grandmaster, I would like to ask: among your other two companions, was there anyone whose Spirit was of the dragon type?"
A trace of surprise appeared in Grandmaster's eyes. "Yes."
"Was there only one, or were both of them?"
"Only one."
"I understand." Chen Feng nodded. "Then I can determine Luo Sanpao's first problem. Its dragon bloodline is just a little too weak, leaving it unable to evolve."
"I knew about that as well, but there is no way to solve it." Grandmaster sighed.
"Grandmaster, don't be impatient. I'm not finished yet. I have a second question." Chen Feng raised two fingers in a V sign. "Among your two companions, was there anyone whose Spirit possessed the Light Attribute?"
"No." Grandmaster shook his head. He felt as though he vaguely understood something, yet he could not grasp exactly what it was.
"In other words, the Golden Sacred Dragon's Light Attribute came entirely from Luo Sanpao. That proves Luo Sanpao's Light Attribute is of an extremely high level, capable of supporting the activity of a Golden Sacred Dragon through its own power alone.
"What it lacks is dragon bloodline and sufficient Soul Power—or rather, energy support. That is why it has remained so weak." Chen Feng gave his conclusion, then asked another question:
"Grandmaster, have you ever obtained a Spirit Beast's Spirit Ring from a dragon-type Soul Beast?"
Grandmaster's expression darkened, and he shook his head.
"Ah, what a pity." Chen Feng sighed.
"So there's still no way?" A trace of pain appeared in Grandmaster's eyes. "Neither of my two Spirit Rings came from dragon-type Soul Beasts, and my Soul Power is now stuck at rank 29. Is there truly no hope left?"
Chen Feng's outstanding academic talent and the professionalism of the questions he had asked had given Grandmaster a faint spark of hope.
But now, was that faint hope finally going to fade away with Chen Feng's sigh?
"No, there is still hope!" Chen Feng said decisively. "Grandmaster, life always finds its own way forward. Do not forget that Luo Sanpao is an external Beast Spirit that is extraordinarily rare across the entire continent."
He pointed at Luo Sanpao, which was circling around him and rubbing against him.
"As an external Beast Spirit, you should not merely regard it as a Spirit. You should regard it as a living being, and the greatest trait of life is growth. The best way to grow is to eat.
"I want to ask, what do you usually feed it?"
"...Radishes." A trace of embarrassment surfaced on Grandmaster's face, but he had already understood Chen Feng's meaning. "You mean Luo Sanpao should consume the flesh and blood of dragon-type Soul Beasts itself?"
Xiao Wu's expression dimmed considerably upon hearing that.
"No, flesh is not actually necessary. Blood alone will do. There is no need to create needless slaughter." Chen Feng shook his head. "And preferably, it should be from Soul Beasts with the Light, lightning, and fire attributes."
Of course, he had noticed the change in Xiao Wu's expression. But at present, aside from avoiding unnecessary killing as much as possible, there was not much else he could do.
At its core, the profession of Soul Master was simply far too distorted. Unless this problem was resolved, the diverse varieties of Soul Beasts that existed today would inevitably perish.
As a Biologist, Chen Feng could not bear such a thing.
